A challenge is to construct guns that fire these kinds of puffers and ships.

A very interesting variation. Here is a chaotic puffer which may inspire a gun for the ships mentioned above.

This pattern is a growing diagonal puffer which leaves a variety of oscillators in its debris. In the process of creating them, it features an ephemeral fractal pattern which grows more detailed with each iteration. Then at gen 200,000 the behaviour changes. A similar event happens around gen 1,000,000. I have not run the pattern much beyond that.

The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

On closer inspection the pattern I showed was not a particularly good example. Here is a synthesis of a different ship:

Code: Select all

x = 70, y = 182, rule = B268S3456F01356K268L0345

It is based on p30 and two copies are synthesized at p60. There are also two spaceship streams at relatively close spacing coming from the south but I think it is feasible to create both of them given a p60 gun.

Here is an alternative synthesis which uses an extra barrier in place of the 30 gen spacing between two ships. It can therefore be made with period being some multiple of 13, however an extra ship is required to "reset" the barrier which slightly complicates the construction.

Code: Select all

Here's a p23 gun based on a different oscillator. Two are combined to show possible spacings between pairs of ships.

Including your new period 23 gun, my gun collection for this rule now contains 32 guns which fire a variety of ships. Unfortunately this little ship:

It can be reduced to have a single stream of the c/2 ship at which a gun can be fired. All manner of reactions are possible, though a lot of them do explode.

In the original chaotic explosion there was another puffer which was producing copies of the puffer shown above (hence the collection of them. Unfortunately I lost that part of the pattern and I can't determine how it worked, nor recreate the original explosion which came from a random scrawl.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

Four-glider syntheses of the glider gun abound, especially when using the two-glider mess.

Code: Select all

x = 61, y = 6, rule = B1S345678F2378K468L03568

On an unrelated note, here is a mess created by a slowship hitting an extended block.

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 5, rule = B1S345678F2378K468L03568

There are now 102 rules in the BSFKL rule family which together with a large collection of patterns are included in the updated achieve BSFKL.zip here:

You may enjoy exploring rules 101 and 102 by installing the following Golly rule trees:

This interesting gun was found simply by observing the evolution of a random pattern generated by Golly using rule B248S3456F038K234567L067. The gun repeatedly fires a salvo of three ships. Notice the complexity of the third ship in each salvo. It is a variant of the oscillator used to construct the other four guns published in my previous post.

Hi Brian,

a couple of very interesting rules, thank you for sharing. Here is a small collection of guns based on a different mechanism.

Nice collection!

After posting yesterdays gun I realized that this common pattern is actually a two barreled gun.

Code: Select all

Here is another gun based on the same pattern:

I have recently grown interested in "far salvos", which are hybrid syntheses with a slowship being hit from the back by a group of faster ships. Most messes caused by the collision occur far from the salvo gun, so any glider produced that goes back towards the gun must withstand many salvos.

A 180-degree reflector, a mess-producing collision, another 180-degree reflector, a 90-degree reflector which also leaves behind a still life, and a 90-degree reflector are below.

Code: Select all

Here is a simple way to generate arbitrarily closely-spaced gliders. It can even generate all slow salvos made of two gliders in the same lane!

As it turns out, although the 10-cell gun is the smallest gun know in this rule, the smallest one-barrel gun is very different from it and uses a different glider-production method than any other gun.

Here is a glider duplicator.

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 10, rule = B2SF2K1

Using it, one can construct guns with arbitrarily high periods. One of them is shown below.

Code: Select all

Has anyone tried generalizing BSFKL to non-totalistic rules? I can see this potentially becoming problematic due to the k transition, which could be confused with the K value especially for Catagolue (which is why I'm planning on making a fourth isoplus notation to remove this issue for there).
