Please read my definition of the BSFKL rule family carefully. In particular the line:

Each of b, s, f, k and l can be multiple unique numbers in the range 0 to 8.

This line defines what b, s, f, k and l are. No other interpretation is implied or required. Any names can be given to the three states and the five parameters. The best definition of the rule family behavior is the Java code. That is why I included it.

If you quote me, please do so correctly. I did not write:

"Therefore I suggest that we use my definition."

I wrote:

"Since no rules have been published using your revised definition I suggest we use mine."

There is certainly a profusion of rules in the BSFKL family which have tamed the behaviour of the explosive B/S rules they are based on. Thank you Brian for posting golly rule tables and sample patterns for the ones you find. I have a look at most of them to see what they do, and even managed to find a synthesis for one of your discovered guns - the spiral quad gun in B2S34F067K12478L01368

I'm spending most of my CA time playing with the loop rules and a few different hexagonal neighbourhood rules at the moment, but I'll continue to watch this thread.

Well, a brief diversion can't hurt. I found an interesting rule based on B35/S2346 - an explosive rule without B2. The rule is B35S2346F01234K23L01234 and it features long lived, small, chaotic patterns which all seem to ultimately die out except for a few still lifes containing only state 1 cells and one oscillator. To my mind there are almost certainly spaceships but I didn't come across any. I haven't figured out how to use the rule tree generator yet, so here is the oscillator in sqc format:

The tools I use to generate a Golly rule table are in directory "BSFKL/Patterns/Golly Rule 001/To Forum". They are:

bsfkl.py
RuleTreeGen.java
SqcToRle.py

Save your file as O.sqc.
Then from the terminal (I use a Mac) type bsfkl.py O.sqc. This gives:

Then edit RuleTreeGen.java replacing lines 8 thru 12 with the corresponding lines generated above.
Now compile using javac RuleTreeGen.java.
Next generate the Golly rule tree with java RuleTreeGen >B35S2346F01234K23L01234.rule
Edit this file by adding the following lines at the beginning

@RULE B35S2346F01234K23L01234

@TREE

Now edit SqcToRle.py changing line 14 so that it has the new rule definition.
Then run SqcToRle.py. This will convert all .sqc files in the directory to .rle files.

And now you are done!

The new rule options dialog in the Square Cell BSFKL program has been modified to allow each of the five parameters to be individually selected for change. Whenever a new rule is generated, random values will be assigned to each selected parameter. If a parameter is not selected its current value will be retained.

There are now 32 rules in the rule collection. All of this is in the updated achieve BSFKL.zip here:

To make the gun, I made a few steps (it's really not optimized, I was just playing a bit):

1. Find a way for replicators to cancel each other but not die (oscillator)
2. Improved it to have some good sparks.
3. Use the sparks to have a gun.
4. Placed few such "unclean" guns together to make a clean periodic gun.

This is just 30 minutes playing. Using scripts it's all probably can be really optimized.
