discusses the chess knight neighborhood. Since it was easy to do, I tried using this neighborhood with the BSFKL program. As expected it produces interesting rules some of which support knight ships.

If anyone is interested in exploring this feature, change lines 143 thru 150 in file BSFKL.java to:

      squareCell.getNeighbor(row - 2, column - 1),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row - 2, column + 1),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row - 1, column + 2),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row + 1, column + 2),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row + 2, column + 1),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row + 2, column - 1),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row + 1, column - 2),
      squareCell.getNeighbor(row - 1, column - 2)


and rebuild the program by typing 'makejar'.

Unfortunately I do not know how to run such rules using Golly. EricG, an inactive member of this forum, was interested in solving this problem some time ago.

Here is a smaller pattern that does the same thing. For the first 196,698 generations it only makes oscillators along a line, but at that generation the pattern starts leaving many high-period oscillators that are not along that line.
