That's because variable f and l were meant to exclude any wire states. For starters does anyone have for demonstration a nice stable loop within foodshapeloop2 from which to start playing around and evolving? Or is the rule not at that point yet?

I have started documenting "genes" in shapeloop. Let me explain quickly how I accomplish this: First I create a long sequence of empty arm (state 1 above state 8 ) like this:
Let's call that the "tray".
I remove the arms or budding state 7 blocks from the outside of the loop so that it's looping passively, and I place the tray so as to make a T at the top right corner of the loop:
Once the entire sequence is duplicated onto the tray, I stop it to break the tray down into genes. I count green right turns (state 6 or state 3) as the "start codons" or sequences here. Every time you hit a 6 or 3 you should break and start a new gene with that 6 or 3 as its leading block. In a way, each gene is four sequences for our purposes, each 90deg transformation of the gene is coded differently. Please copy and paste any genes by selecting only the tray, with no extra space on height and width, as the code resultant from the copy and paste will be our unique identifier, letting us refer to specific genes, and keep them organized
I'm putting them in a Google Sheets spreadsheet, which you are free to edit to add any additional genes. Please Ctrl+F for duplicates first:

I'm doing this because I'm convinced that if we build this database of genes, and then programmatically seed a large selections (or just build the copy and paste code to seed a large selections) with random genes at a frequency that encourages them to occasionally abut each other, we could have a reallty interesting result when we push the start button!
We could simulate artificial mutation/gene exchange/genetic recombination in this way, processes that have been most significant drivers of diversity and complexity in real life.
What do you think? Anybody want to help out with either the database or the programming for seeding of the selection?

I would suggest that one of the interested forum members start a new thread which contains the definitions of all current shapeloop variants. This thread could then provide a means to add, delete and change rule definitions as new variants are tested. It would also provide a convenient place for the casual reader to run posted patterns by matching the correct rule to the pattern.

I actually spent some time putting together a website to house Golly patterns and rules and such. This is a good forum, but it is not the best website for cataloging and distributing Golly patterns and the like. I've started by posting and organizing the Shapeloop rules. The ruleset section of your website has a couple of oversights. It does not include foodshapeloop, which pi_guy314 posted on October 19th, 2014 and which has had several revisions since then. It and the rulesets derived from it do still have several bugs. I posted foodshapeloop2 on November 8th, 2014 and intended it to be a variation of foodshapeloop, but with food deletion rules. The latest version of foodshapeloop2 was posted on December 18th, 2014, and its immediate parent rule is foodshapeloop.
With respect to 2armshapeloop-a, it was created by alexv and posted in the Self-Replicator Competition thread on October 1st, 2014. Its immediate parent rule is 2armshapeloop, which is not included in your list of rulesets. It was posted by pi_guy314 on September 30th, 2014. There is also a rule named 2armshapeloop2-a that has shapeloop2a as its immediate parent. I posted it on October 10th, 2014.

Apologies, c0b0p0 certainly they were oversights and not deliberate misattributions. I'll get these fixed. But you should think about creating an account and contributing. I think that's the surest way to avoid such occurrences in the future.

I've updated the rule to 1.06. I also discovered a functional square loop in shapeloop3 (the new rule) that is very destructive (I didn't find it naturally). I could edit the rule if it appears naturally and destroys everything.

I updated both rules to 1.7. Also, I may completely change what state 10 will do in the next update (1.08). The reason why is to add a new method of getting rid of square loops. This new method would get rid of the square loop posted above and also will reduce the amount of transitions by a lot. I will also post a conversion rule that will fix patterns that aren't functioning because of the change.
