No problem at all, just wanted to mention it.

On that note, this rule:

also exhibited similar behavior (I stopped searching it when I noticed).

A little taming should do the trick. @drc @AbhpzTa.

Can we program apgsearch to bypass pathology like this?

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 32, rule = B2cei3aciry4certw5aejkny78/S1e2in3aejny4eiknqtwy5ceijny6acn8

I haven't checked every single one, but I think these are all explosive (and thus don't lend themselves to soup-searching).

Another somehow related messages: I have just finished my first 2^18 batch of non-totalistic rules. You might notice this just corresponds to the size of totalistic rulespace, but only represents 1 / 2^84 of the non-totalistic rulespace ........ I think this thing definitely needs more automation.....

At the moment I am combining brain power and CPU power to conduct the searching
  • CPU time: Searching 2^18 rules takes approximately 1.32E6 seconds on my Xeon E5620 at 6 threads. This means 7.92E6 secs for a single thread.
  • Manual annotation: I have just manually annotated the complex dynamics within a set of 30/512*2^18 rules in 30 mins/1800 seconds. Thus annotating 2^18 rules will approximately takes 3120s. In other words one skilled person can finish annotating the totalistic BS-rulespace within 1 hour if preliminary CPU search is done.
(*:The annotation here includes flagging for diagonal strips in their DensiFluct profiles only.)

Conclusion: CPU time is the limiting factor so far. Annotation speed is approximately equivalent to parallel contribution of 2540 threads (7.92E6 / 3.12E3).

(I am feeling quite flattered to be a 2540-core processor so far.)

Sure, I submitted one. (It just barely stayed below the 1 MiB limit Catagolue imposes, too.)
Oh and B3ai4e5ain6acn78/S3-i45ain6acn7c8 thanks
That one's faster, and hauls are more moderately-sized, so I'll leave it running for a while.

BTW, a general request: if you - that is to say anyone - submit a haul request, please try and verify that the rule/symmetry you're requesting can indeed be searched. Don't ask for explosive rules, for overproductive rules with producing overly large hauls, and so on. Ideally do a haul yourself first if you can to prove the rule can be soup-searched on Catagolue!

(*:The annotation here includes flagging for diagonal strips only.)

Wouldn't it be possible to automatically detect diagonals to reduce the number of rules that have to be manually reviewed?

That will be the idea. But we needs some kind of scalar metric (0/1).

EDIT: To disambiguate, I meant strip as in their calculated profiles.

The yl192 is a gun:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 5, rule = B2ce3aeikq4aeikw5c_S1367
7bo$bo5bo$obo6b2o$bo5bo$7bo!
But where is the xp132?

The second rule is explosive:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 9, rule = B2ce3aeikq4aeikw5ce8/S134ce67
b2o$b2o$b2o$o2$o$b2o$b2o$b2o!
Still drifting.

It's weird that you searched 130000 soups but got no xp132_0ggy2co0g384z3rdh.
Check census

This was working just fine until about ~9800 soups into the first haul, at which point it ran into this:

Pretty, if a bit slow to evolve, and rather memory-intensive. But Golly's not crashed yet, so I'll leave it running for now until it either finishes the haul or does indeed crash.

Actually, I don't think apgsearch collects information about reactions anyway... So it is not necessary to search an explosive rule like that....
I would say the rule is on the edge of explosion, though it's not obvious to a human tester. But the spaceship interactions are indeed interesting.

No, it doesn't collect any real information; this would've just been a zz_* pattern. But it died anyway, during the "Expunge Objects" phase. 56 GiB seems to be my (virtual) memory limit these days.

This is a perfect example of why I asked for people to please test the viability of soup-searching a rule before making requests.

I did, 5919 soups were tested, although I had to go before it could finish. Maybe it's the wrong rule, though. Will check later

Oh, the rule isn't explosive or anything like that. It just runs afoul of Catagolue's various haul size limits -- it's too productive, with too many distinct objects, to submit anything for it.
