B2e3ai4arw5678/S3-an4ar5i678

Saka requested that this rule be soup-searched over in the haul request thread.

A few discoveries were mentioned in the "soup search result in rules other than Conway's Life" thread starting here, but I think this rule deserves its own thread.

Soup-searching has so far yielded 43 spaceships of 21 distinct periods (many of them quite high, up to 410 so far), hundreds of linear-growth patterns, and more oscillators than you can shake a stick at.

Spaceships seem to move by crawling out, then pulling their rear end in again, not unlike a slug or a caterpillar might. All periods are multiples of five so far, with the exception of 19. Linear-growth patterns also all have periods that are multiples of five.

Oscillators are invariably of even period, with the exception of a solitary and highly symmetric xp13.

Spacefillers are common in this rule. There's a couple of pathological objects as well, probably high-period oscillators that apgsearch did not classify.

I'll go out on a limb and claim that this rule (probably) has:
  • spaceships for every period that is a multiple of five.
  • linear-growth patterns for every period that is a multiple of five.
  • oscillators for every even period.
  • and possibly oscillators for every (sufficiently high) period, period. (No pun intended.)
Any interesting patterns found using other tools?

(Also, any suggestions for a name for this rule? I'm tempted to call it "Slug World" due to the way its ships move.)

ntzfind hates this rule. I would like to note that most (if not all) of the yls are actually one yl5 with different bases.

Here is an extensible 2c/6 spaceship. I haven't been able to stabilise the corresponding 2c/6 wickstrectcher but I suspect it won't be too complex.

The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

No idea. What tools would one use to search for a gun? (Or is it a purely intellectual exercise requiring nothing but a pen, a notebook and a sharp mind? I'm pretty sure I can supply two out of three at least...)

Just trying to do a haul for D2_+1 in apgsearch, BTW, but it's even slower than D2_x and will likely have to run overnight to finish.

Nice. Including the ov_970 and an ov_q225 in D2_x, that brings this rule to a 43 different spaceship periods and 110 different ships (107 of which have been seen in C1).

Also, I didn't mention it before, but the D2_+1 haul contained an xp19, xp19_0kqsuusvsuusqkz4lvvvvvvvvvvvl4z0nfvvvvfvvvvfn:

I did two more D2_x hauls overnight (they seem to take about 7 to 12 hours). Here's a new ov_q575 from one of them -- too large for Catagolue to handle at all, so there's no sense in linking to the actual object page:

Here's two more natural ships of interest.

First, an xq20, the first ship of that period in this rule, filling in one of the gaps on the list of spaceship periods:

Code: Select all

And, at the upper end of the range, an xq680, the second highest natural period observed thus far after the earlier ov_q970:

It looks as if every odd period may be achievable. Here's a series of patterns that evolve into p13, p15, p17, p19, p21, p25, p27, p31, p33, p37, ...:

Code: Select all

x = 257, y = 27, rule = B2e3ai4arw5678/S3-an4ar5i678

Unfortunately, this misses every period of the form 23+6n, but it is almost there.

I will continue apgsearching this rule as much as I can.

EDIT: Common p42 and p96 sparky oscillators that appear a lot in soups, as well as a p120 I made by extending it:

Code: Select all

x = 99, y = 19, rule = B2e3ai4arw5678/S3-an4ar5i678

EDIT2: Apparently there's more? Here's a p108 that has the same type of spark:

EDIT3: I believe it's never been proven that there are oscillators of every even period. Here's a pattern that proves just that:

Ran some searches in an attempt to find a p3 oscillator. Found nothing (tried up to 23x23 D2- in rlifesrc), but I did find a flexible p3 wick:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 29, rule = B2e3ai4arw5678/S3-an4ar5i678

I'll keep my progress posted, hopefully.

EDIT:

Ran a few more searches with no luck, gave up. Back to apgsearch I guess. Here's a partial p3 component that I think is nice:

Code: Select all

EDIT2: The p120 is capable of eating the most common spaceship:

A splitter would be great but i don't even know if that's possible. Here's a 135 -> puffer conversion:

EDIT3: I found a couple more p120 reactions. In order:

This means that, barring the currently undiscovered periods 3, 5, 7, and 9, this rule is omniperiodic. Here's a p69 based on the above that shows its mechanism more clearly:

EDIT5: The first natural xp94 just showed up in C1:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B2e3ai4arw5678/S3-an4ar5i678

A third distinct xq19, namely xq19_avuvuvvvsuokgz7nvvvvvvvvvvve2zw2177vff7vvvvv44zy83, has shown up naturally. Here it is arising out of a soup:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B2e3ai4arw5678/S3-an4ar5i678

EDIT: A new spaceship period, xq555_0gsooousvuucfzonvvvvvvvh1zgfvvvvvr2zvnvvvvn51zy033, has shown up in soup. It is a 111c/555:

Code: Select all
