It seems that interest has died off pretty soon. I still think this rule has great potential for engineered circuits.

Yes, despite the small and orthogonal p2 glider, its guns, eaters, stable reflectors and signal duplicators etc. it would be easy to construct complex patterns. Probably the audience are keeping in mind and in scope that there are even outer-totalistic Life-like rules without proofs for availability for arbitrary computations

The proofs of this are exactly the same as in Life and apply to all rules with guns and a clean annihilation reaction.

What I think is going on is that we're finding so many rules with dynamics similar to this rule that the threshold for lasting interest keeps being pushed higher and higher.
We build the oscillators, we construct the guns, we search for some ships, and we move on to the next challenge.
