Oscillating still-life rule becomes a bit more interesting

Post by Βεν Γ. Κυθισ » December 27th, 2018, 7:24 am

I made a non-totalistic rule I called Still Blinking, the rulestring is B3-a4ejw5cky6n/S234a5a8 and it is designed to make some common still-lives from Life become period-2 oscillators. My signature shows the patterns I chose to make oscillate (EDIT: it does not anymore). When I was messing around with ransom soups with this rule I found more oscillators! I don't think there are any spaceships in this rule but feel free to try to make one, if you do succeed please reply with a RLE containing the spaceship(s) you found (EDIT: spaceships are proven impossible in this rule). I don't know what the purpose of this post was other than to get the world to know this rule's existence. Here's the Catagoule page for this rule

Here is the RLE file with the intended oscillators:

You could simply have pasted the pattern as a code block directly in your post, like this:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 17, rule = B3-a4ejw5cky6n/S234a5a8

(Even though it's in your signature.)

Here's a stamp collection of all the oscillators I have found so far:

An efficient way to do this would be to get someone to run a few Catagolue hauls for you in this rule -- it looks to be eminently apgsearch-compatible, but it looks like no one has submitted any hauls yet. Catagolue can almost certainly find objects faster than you can, and will automatically tabulate them for you, keep track of the periods, see if any spaceships or puffers or other weird-and-interesting things show up, and so forth.

(Or install apgsearch yourself, of course.)

I added more stuff that I found by checking an entire list of simple strict still-lives.

I dont know if you know this or not, but this rule does not have any spaceships because no pattern can escape it's bounding diamond.
For a rule to have spaceships:
B2e+B3i
B2c+B3a
B2ec
B3ai
B2a
B1e, but no B1c
B0

new p10 and p6

Here's a c/2d signal traveling through the extended Tub p2. It's actually two instances of some sort of reaction changing the state of the p2. I don't know if it's useful or not.

BlinkLife Research thread

Somehow I want to call this rule BlinkLife, and here:
Oscillator
There's a Glide-symmetry oscillator(which is interesting!) period 18 which is the highest record of non-trivial oscillator period in BlinkLife.

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 7, rule = B3-a4ejw5cky6n/S234a5a8
4b2o$3bobo$4bo$2b2o$obo$2o$bo!
I'm suprised that this p6 oscillator haven't been noticed.I recommend to call it "Arhra" because it's apgcode is 4arhra4.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3-a4ejw5cky6n/S234a5a8
2b3o$b2ob2o$o5bo$b2ob2o$2b3o!
Misc

Yes, it is useful! See if you can find a signal turner...

Working on it. Someday I'll classify them to smaller classes.

Completed:

Still life, xs9 finished!

Still life, xs10 working.

Oscillator, xp2 finished!

Oscillator, xp3 finished!

Oscillator, xp4 working.

Code: Select all

I found a p2 agar/phoenix made of alternating cells:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3-a4ejw5cky6n/S234a5a8:T10,10

I also found a replicator that consists of infinitely long lines:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 10, rule = B3-a4ejw5cky6n/S234a5a8:T0,10

I AM INACTIVE AND LIKELY WILL BE FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE, DON'T ATTEMPT TO TALK TO ME AS I LIKELY WON'T RESPOND.

Yes! I also confused about this. Rowett said that is a bug and will be fixed in the next release.

Nice find about the agar. I'll explore more agar later.

This "infinitely long lines" replicator also works in CGOL and is well known as the base of the "line-puffer".
