Things You've Been Doing Other Than CGoL

Post by Saka » March 22nd, 2016, 6:08 am

This is a thread for other things you've been doing other than CGoL. I'm not sure why I made this thread :?
For example, I have been playing around with life simulators, Darwin Pond to be exact.
So what have you been doing?

Looking into generalizations to this puzzle. Clicking the link gives solutions too easily so I'll post the statement here:

Two numbers are chosen between 2 and 100. Sam is told their sum, Polly their product. This conversation ensues:
Sam (to Polly): "You do not know the two numbers."
Polly: "That was true. Now I do know them."
Sam: "Now I do too."
What are possible number pairs for which this is valid?

If the lower bound of 2 is raised to 3, and the upper bound is increased arbitrarily high, a cool class of solutions emerges.

Also tonight I'm going to see Between the Buried and Me & August Burns Red with my brother. Former is my favorite band, latter is his. I'm so happy they're doing a show together. Anyone else with similar tastes?

I've lately become interested in Googlewhacks, and I think I hold the third-highest score in the world (multiplying the number of Google hits for each individual word) with "bad hectobXXXoride" (the XXX is to keep this page from appearing on Google searches).

Started getting into the whole cubing (Rubik's Cube) buisness lately. I can't help but see gliders, bullet heptominoes, etc. on the faces sometimes when there are arrangements of cubes of that colour.

Gotten really into Don't Starve Together and more recently Terraria. Still very new at Terraria but I've put half a thousand hours into DST at this point. PM me your steam ID if you want to play either together!

I often look at topics related to physics and chemistry, particularly those involving the element fluorine.

Just broke my high score and the world record with "bad octadecatXXXetraene", which scores over a trillion.

Nice to see some other cubers on here! I've been solving on and off since about 2007 or so, but I focused more on spending obscene amounts of money collecting some of the weirder shaped puzzles, and less time trying to get my solve times down. I average about 30-35 seconds on 3x3x3, but I have done for the past year or so and I'm showing no real signs of improving...

How are you getting on with the Master Skewb? It's one of the few puzzles I've never figured out how to properly solve (or even how to consistently solve one side, I have a right nightmare with it)

About 10 years ago I was into cubing a lot and could solve 3x3 in around 40 seconds but I never tried to improve beyond that. 4x4 and 5x5 I could solve but it took closer to a 10-minute time frame because I was using my own methods instead of the most efficient ones. I also fooled around with odd-shaped puzzles during college but wasn't as into it.

Rubik's cubes and their cousins are a great way of learning group theory, for anyone interested in that subect!

Way too scary for me. I have trouble even holding it, since if I hold it too loose I might drop it, and if I hold it too tight I might turn a side and end up accidentally scrambling it while trying to revert the turn.

Calm down Satan. I'm not that secure yet lmao.

(one of these days a human might be able to do a 600 cell hyper icosahedron...)
