Freywa wrote:Ahem. Traditionally (since around 2015, I believe) I abstain from most websites for 40 hours on April Fools' Day (specifically, midnight 1 April to 4pm 2 April UTC+8) because I hate April Fools' Day jokes.
That sounds perfectly reasonable. On the other hand, Saka's response seems to indicate that not everyone shares your aversion. It also seems perfectly reasonable to allow people to be mildly entertained by whatever they find mildly entertaining.

I'll certainly reconsider my own tradition of April 1 posts on conwaylife.com, if even 10% of forum users complain that they're irritating and unfunny! But so far that hasn't happened.

I don't really want to comment in the Lifeviewer thread, but as there's no other way to make one's thoughts known on this forum I shall make a comment here. I liked the wormhole demonstration. It being nearly the 2nd of April in my timezone it didn't take me by surprise, but it did elicit a big grin on my face. I particularly like those posts at this time of the year which use some clever mechanism to create an illusion.

The loafer soup I think also warrants a bit of praise for rewinding a ship back 5 gen to something resembling a Catagolue soup. Though I have a feeling there may be previous examples which rewound the loafer further - anyone remember where that might be?

I find April fools day a relaxing break from being serious.
When else could you post a prank?

Finding the derivatives the lim h->0 ((f(x+h)-f(x))/h) way is soooooo tedious, especially when you aleady know the power rule and stuff.

I get that it’s important for education but I feel Leibniz’s rules that make it much faster should be introduced earlier. I am taking a huge paper calculus course and just finished the limit section. Now I have to do at least 100 pages on derivatives, based on the number of pages there were on limits.

Today's loafer soup wasn't cooked up fresh. It's just the same one that showed up on "Catagolue" a year ago. T=-6, not -5, if I'm counting right.

This is not actually how it works, but I came up with the idea after seeing how dvrgn's wormhole worked.

Code: Select all

Well, that's slightly disappointing - and not only is my memory failing but I can't count either :( :P

Yeah, that’s why they were called an idiot, I’d imagine. But hey, at least they didn’t do the more obnoxious kind of spam.

On a completely unrelated note, I just learned how to differentiate parametric functions. The secret is that dy/dx = (dy/dt)/(dx/dt). (Note:
dy, dt, and dx aren’t technically variables, so the fact isn’t necessarily intuitive or trivial)

Between what?
If you mean the more obnoxious kind of spam, I mean the replaces-whole-pages-with-YouTube-links thing.

Oh, lateral thinking.
Actually, the difference is currently between ...intuitive or trivial) what’s the and between what’s the difference...

I like fooling with grammar, along with characters (as in symbols).

For instance:
What’s the point?

Yeah, a fun component.
Would be useful if you needed it, I suppose, but of course in no way makes a SL notable.

I still kinda like making huge SLs.

What are these SLs called?

Diced oil ion six = anagram of silicon dioxide

Sioxide should be a nickname of silicon dioxide, since silicon is Si.

I mean, It’s an Si oxide.
