I've had 200 CPU cores running apgmera in the past, but I had the common decency to use a haul size of 30 million.

I've been doing way faster than that, even though i wasnt doing any searching today. Guess i'll need to tone it down a bit.

Unless you have a good reason, larger hauls are preferable over smaller hauls -- it transfers the workload away from Catagolue and towards your own machine. You also gain a slight speed advantage from greater caching and fewer proof-of-work exchanges.

wwei23, you've started to irritate many users on this forum, with a combination of needlessly promoting your '1x256X2+1' results over various threads, multiple-posting, and pointless necroposting. Despite several people requesting, with varying levels of politeness, that you cease this behaviour, you persisted unabated.

I gritted my teeth and tolerated this, for a short while, but then decided you went too far after posting swastika* RLEs on two distinct threads in the Sandbox. After all, this could give seriously wrong signals about the nature of the GoL community. Assuming your chronological age is comparable to your mental age, I understand that the connotations of that symbol refer to events many multiples of your lifetime in the past -- however, several users of this forum have lived through the period in question, and could plausibly have traumatic memories of these incidents. Even more worryingly, recent events in Charlottesville, USA, have shown this ideology to not be confined to the history books.

* Yes, I realise that the symbol (either in the same or reversed orientation) far predated the period in question, having semiotic significance in both Hinduism and Judaism since antiquity. However, your entitling of the post as "thread for your scary discoveries" demonstrates that you were not using it as an ancient mystical symbol (which would have been acceptable) but instead referring to its 20th-century corruption.

If it were my choice, I would ban you from these forums for a month. Fortunately for you, I don't have that instrumental power, so I've instead decided to increase the minimum haul threshold on 1x256X2+1 to 20 million.

I suggest apologising sincerely to the populace of this forum for any offence you may have caused, lest I may increase this threshold even further or ban you from Catagolue completely.

I agree with the above post by calcyman, especially the fact that these swastika posts are coming at a very bad time, around a large tragedy, as well as the fact that there are older members, and the fact that this community isn't supposed to be so...edgy. A hypothetical newcomer has probably joined this place, looked at a couple of the posts, and said "wow, this place looks really cool!" but then they look at one final thread and it contains swastika posts, and they get fed up and leave.

Maybe this isn't the right thread for this, but you yourself, wwei23, tend not to post in the right threads anyway.

If I had found out about this forum now, I would search the forums from top to bottom, ending with the sandbox. I probably would find your thread for you scary discoveries thread at some point and then think something like
Alternate universe me would probably have wrote:How are they perfectly fine with talking about Nazism? That is a very serious thing. The people here are not the kind of people I want to associate with. This forum is stupid. I'm going to look for something better.

FYI, Catagolue is not down. Please don't kill me for posting here when Catagolue isn't down or for using the pointless italic boxes in the title.

Just to bring this thread back on topic... looks like Catagolue's down again.

I saw some people uploading new hauls by the minute last night, so: everybody, please take care to not submit hauls too often. Nothing's gained if Catagolue goes down, and even if it stays up you're increasing the amount Calcyman has to pay, for absolutely no benefit.

Please remember, he's paying for the site out of his own pocket. The least thing we can do is not make it more expensive for him.

Thanks.</soapbox>

If I was doing that, I'm very sorry, I may have overestimated how much B2ce4-cint67e8/S14567/D2_x would make my computer explode, I think I set it to 10000 (~10 minutes) by accident.

On another topic, when does catagolue's data 'refresh'? As in: when does a new cycle of catagolue actually being up start, rather than staying down?

On the plus side(?), at least this is the first time this is happening in a large while.

Daily -- the quota resets at midnight, though I couldn't tell you off-hand which midnight (i.e. in which time zone). I think it's UTC, though.

The problem is b3aijkn4ty5es2-i3-aey4cny5iny6a7/C1, which is managing to throw Java heap space errors because there are so many objects. Please stop searching this...

Are you sure that's the right rule? It doesn't seem like it's very erratic just by me hand-searching it. But that's just my experience.

As for the classic machine-gunning of hauls problem, couldn't it be changed so that there exists a cooldown period (15 minutes or so) for users uploading hauls? This could possibly also be bypassed at a small fee similarly to what was proposed a while ago, taking care of the costs and removing the cooldown period for the desired user for a certain specified amount of time. Any hauls which are submitted during the cooldown period would simply be rejected and apgsearch would continue to search, stopping the risk of losing information.

Or am I missing the fact that simply checking the cooldown time would itself require a data check operation and eat up all the money even faster?

You're missing that certain rules explode after a while, and so people may want to machine gun hauls, reset, and then repeat. Or that some people run multiple searchers.

Maybe a 'grant' could be granted (no pun intended) by calcyman for rules like that which can explode yet are still apgsearch-able? This may help with certain 'barely explosive' rules.

At least it's not like at some point last year when it kept going down every other day. Apgsearch safely! :D
I might tackle (once I have more free time) an automatic apgsearcher for a given .txt file with each rule in a separate line, which could run a pre-search preliminary haul size estimation and could search accordingly. It seems a bit of a big project at the moment though.

there goes my cycles running at home...

majestas, i highly doubt 2718281828 meant to overload catagolue, or that he was even entirely responsible in the first place.

oh also you should credit me for the rake in 'movero' since i found it in b2-as12-i3-j

Yeah, I also don't think 2718281828 had the intention of breaking Catagolue, however, the sheer number of rules he searched suggests that he was using an automatic apgsearch, which learned exponentially quickly and (contrary to his intentions) pursued the goal of breaking Catagolue.

But really, it just seems like an automatic apgsearch of his went out of control.

Now don't go quotin' me on this, but I don't think the "sheer number of rules [...] searched" is a problem for Catagolue as such --- it's the number of datastore operations (as those cost money), for which the number of distinct objects is a decent approximation (given sufficiently large hauls). Put more succinctly, it's long-tailed rules that can be problematic.

The Catagolue tutorial has some words of warning to this effect as well.
