Random Experiences in the "Hobby"
Share your weird, random experiences that you have encountered in the hobby. It can't be a normal experience, like weird moments.
Mine:
1. I was making a still life thingy once and Gustavo's Short Table was still on the wiki and I actually got fooled and was confused how something on the lifewiki could be wrong lol
1.5 I looked at Gustavo's picture and I was like WAT THAT LOOKS LIKE MY COUSIN GOD IT'S SO GRAINY.
2. The first time I saw unname's post asking what sesame oil is I literally searched sesame oil on the lifewiki
3. I found a "methuselah" that kinda barely looked like the number 100 and also lasted 100 generations.
4. I managed to weld 2 mangoes and 2 beehives... when I was around 8 or 9. I was really proud of myself and satisfied back then.
5. I was uber surprised when I saw the pentadecathlon or whatever in a random soup for the first time ever.
6. I literally WATCHED Gemini move on 10^2

Re: Random Experiences in the "Hobby"
I remember I was using a really terrible Life application, and I found a natural moose antlers. I was genuinely shocked.
Also, I remember thinking there were finite still lifes, and being surprised that the mango was a thing.

Did you mean infinite? Or did you really think finite SLs were impossible?drc wrote: Also, I remember thinking there were finite still lifes, and being surprised that the mango was a thing.
Re: Random Experiences in the "Hobby"
Finite amounts of still lifes. Block, beehive, tub, pond, barge and loaf were the only ones I thought existed. I didn't even think barge was extensible.Saka wrote:Did you mean infinite? I think drc means he once held a misconception that there was a limited amount of still lifes (in other words, a finite (not infinite) amount of still lifes).Saka wrote: You mean infinite

I was so socially awkward in the past and it will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Re: Random Experiences in the "Hobby"
For me, one of the most memorable experiences would have to be from this thread.
Gustavo had just posted a 2-glider destruction of a long ship in HighLife. Dave Greene replied that a long ship could be destroyed by only one glider in HighLife. Gustavo claimed that his discovery worked in Life as well, but then realized that it turned into a glider and block in Life. He then added another glider to destroy the block and make a clean "reflector". Michael Simkin replied that using a long ship to reflect a glider 180 degrees could be done with only one glider. He also said that it was hugely common for a still life to be destroyed by one glider and challenged someone to find the smallest still life that a single glider couldn't destroy.
9 months later, Gustavo himself asked the same question and I used my glider destruction script to answer it (in Life). And lo and behold, the smallest still life that a single glider couldn't destroy was... the long ship.
(Actually it tied with the canoe in cell count, but it still had the smallest bounding box.)
This left me with the realization that if only Gustavo had found his two-glider destruction in Life instead of HighLife, it would have almost been notable enough to deserve its own thread.

Wait, you're unname66609, right? You appeared about a month after he made his last post.PHPBB12345 wrote:"Sesame oil" isn't GOL object.Saka wrote:2. The first time I saw unname's post asking what sesame oil is I literally searched sesame oil on the lifewiki
I'm sure there are many people who want to know what you were thinking when you posted "what is “sesame oil”?"
