Finding a job for the unemployed mango

Post by Rhombic » August 3rd, 2017, 10:30 am

Someone recently asked whether the mango, or a mango, depending on your desired level of courtesy (HRH the Duke of Mango), has been used in a conduit or "interesting reaction".
Apparently, nobody has really been able to use a mango appropriately in an interesting situation.

This thread is meant to find uses for a mango, if there are any. For the sake of simplicity, consider mango to refer to the 8-cell still life and not to the drupe or to ...oh my god!

Here goes a potential candidate.

Clean B-climbing reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 144, rule = B3/S23

I tried a search of ancient archives hoping that someone would have mentioned needing a slightly offset support structure in close quarters for ... something or other ... but no luck.

Found only a useless piece of trivia: you can hit a mango with a glider to produce a pentadecathlon. But it happens via a simple pi+block combination that can also happen in lots of other ways:

Code: Select all

#C pentadecathlon from mango, and from 13.214 [Koenig numbering]
x = 166, y = 61, rule = LifeHistory

The reaction in the first post is so far the most usable, but I've found another orthogonal climber that is unusable but at least shows new potential reactions:

I've thrown a mango into a CatForce search, and no mango-specific reaction came out of it. Here was the input file:

Another idea I had was to take two conduits that use a tub as a rock, and place them together in such a way that a mango would be needed to weld the tubs. However, I only found two conduits that use a tub as a rock, and neither of them could be placed so close together.

... Hey, look -- BlinkerSpawn has found a use for a mango (in the 14G recipe)! Two mangoes, actually.

Unfortunately I suspect that the mangoes could be replaced with some two-glider dying sparks, reducing the cost to 12 gliders and presumably putting the mangoes out on the street again. Maybe I just shouldn't mention that...!

I actually checked against a few of the standard sparks before trying the mango path and they didn't quite work. There might be some other, more obscure way to shave off a glider but I'm not certain that's possible.

I decided to send the mango to WLS Elementary School. So far, it's just trying to think that it's something it's not:

The latest version of slmake uses a block-on-mango as an indication of the input glider stream:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 15, rule = LifeHistory
11.2C$11.2C2$11.2D$10.D2BD$9.D2BD$8.2B2D$7.4B$6.4B$5.4B$4.4B$3.3AB$2.
3BA$.3BA$4B!
It very snugly occupies the four diagonals of the input glider stream, and determines the orientation uniquely.

Here's definitely my favourite mango use:

Code: Select all

#C Three frame flavours of a 21-bit p3 oscillator (bushing variant of the jam)
#C Mango jam w/loaf, an 18-glider synthesis
#C Mango jam w/tail, a 21-glider synthesis
#C Mango jam w/R-bee, a 24-glider synthesis
x = 25, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

$2bo9b2o7b2o$3b2o7bo8b2o!
Unfortunately this is not mango-specific as can be seen here:

Code: Select all

#C A 22-bit casing variant of mango jam
#C Mango jam weld L and carrier with eater head, as-yet unsynthesised
x = 8, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
2b2o$o2bo2b2o$2obobobo$2bo2bo$2bobo2bo$3bo3bo$7bo$4bo$5b2o!
Mango jam can be supported on any non-still life ("restless life") with appropriate bushing, however the three 21-bit mango jams are still the smallest.
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring
