CA Grammar/Language Thread

Post by Saka » September 23rd, 2017, 9:40 pm

A place to discuss the language of CA and it's grammar. This thread arised from a discussion of what the plural form of "SMOS" (Spaceship Made up of Other Spaceships) should be:
Saka, in the unrecognised CA thread wrote:We must discuss. SMOSsae? Oh god no not methusynthesae SMOSs? SMOSa? SMOSen? SMOae? SMOce? SMOves? SMeese?
Gamedziner, in the unrecognised CA thread wrote:SsMOS, since the acronym stands for "Spaceship Made of Other Spaceships." That's my opinion, at least.
Also, we need a few words that describe certain CA things, like an adjective for this ship that describes that it makes lots of still lifes and stuff:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 16, rule = B3aijn5e8/S2-i3ijnqr4-aijk5aceqr6-e7c8

The -os ending suggests that it's a Greek word, so I would say the plural was SMOI.

And then SMOSMOSMOS. And SMOSMOSMOSMOS.

Hmm, interesting. So the "I" sound is correct:
SMOi (Smo-eye)
SMOi (SMO-ee)
SMye
Any other good potential plurals?

SMOSMOS have not been achieved yet, but you can help by running Nasvadi's rule range script on all the SMOSes (since we dont have a good plural yet...) found so far and finding which works in most rules.

Anyway, for objects/rules like the ship in the OP, what about Essell? (Pun on SL)
And Cloudy for rules that expand into random "clouds"?

The problem with that is the acronym becomes "Spaceship Made of Other i."

x = 81, y = 96, rule = LifeHistory

or why not just MSMOS for Multiple Spaceships Made Of Spaceships? it doesn't have to me grammatical rocket science.
Also for the other thing, why not just DSMOS for Dirty Spaceship Made Of Spaceships?
EDIT: rough pronunciations: (MŬS-mōs) and (DŬZ-mōs)

SMOSen, definitely, in analogy with "boxen", "VAXen" and so on.

But SMOS doesn't end -x?

Hold on guys, the origin of SMOS is in the title "Spaceships made up of other spaceships (SMOS)" and contains the plural of spaceship. Therefore, SMOS is already in plural form! I guess this is a case where the singular and plural forms of a word are identical, as in "glasses."

Code: Select all

x = 81, y = 96, rule = LifeHistory
58.2A$58.2A3$59.2A17.2A$59.2A17.2A3$79.2A$79.2A2$57.A$56.A$56.3A4$27.

$4.2A18$4.2A$4.2A2.2A$8.2A!

...makes complete sense and is very simple. but have you even looked at ANYTHING in CA? you're in the wrong neighborhood to be 'simple.'
