Population should be minimal, but bounding box isn't.

Never got word back on my 42-cell solution, so I'll go ahead and post this:

So sorry about that, I completely missed your edit. Is there some secret trick that I don't know about to be notified of edits to posts?

Anyway, I'm not 100% sure that 42 is optimal, given that I haven't verified with a search program, but it's the smallest I've been able to get:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
4.AC$5.A$3.C2.AC$3.AC.C$.CA2.C2.A$C2.A2.CACAC$.C2.AC5.C$2.CA3.A2.CA$
4.A.AC$4.C.C$.CA.A.A$.AC.CA!
I'm surprised no one found my solution, as the "diagonalistic" nature of the puzzle should have been an obvious clue.

Ahem, anyway, I've never created one of these, but here we go, an easy-but-kinda-tricky one:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
2o$obo2$2bobobo$5bobo$7b2o2$7bo2$6bo$4bo!
My lowest is 47 cells, but I'm a novice, so it can probably be reduced.

This puzzle is impossible. There is no way to stabilise the centre cell (in red below) without causing one of it's neighbours to die. I suggest you at least create a solution yourself before posting another puzzle

Code: Select all
