I've followed instructions for now, but have to admit I'm very tempted to delete the whole thread. It's not in the Sandbox, and so far there isn't any content that has any business being in the main forums.

Will probably move everything to the Sandbox at some point.

What is the point of preserving the OP, though? It's not even interesting spam, like that "KIRST" rant was. It's just a generic advertisement about something completed unrelated to CAs.

Preserving the links in the OP is helping the spammers.

Perhaps there should be a thread in the Sandbox for archiving spam messages in case there is a way to predict spammers from their usernames. Of course, the links would need to be removed to avoid promoting the spam.

Given it's just a spam thread, there is little reason not to delete it outright... and if anything, other users quoting the original spam, including all URLs, is just yet another reason to do so.

(People, please remember this is an academic forum. And that goes for the Sandbox as well.)

Agreed. Mostly I'm just curious about what the thought process was that led Majestas32 to make things complicated, instead of just marking the OP as spam as usual. Additional posts just make more work for the moderators, who would all really rather there wasn't any of this kind of silly maintenance to be done.

The downside of just deleting entire threads is that the "Please Don't Do Things Like This" messages disappear along with the original posts.

It's mostly since I'm tired of having "This spammer did this:
link
Link
Link"

And when I click on those links the spam post is gone

Ah, got it. Suppose I just make a habit of deleting the post reporting the spam, along with the spam itself? Would anyone object to that?

Sometimes I've tried editing in a "cleaned all this up" message to someone else's post, but that's a pain too -- maybe simplest to just make everything disappear if there's no particular value to keeping it.

Just do whatever is least effort on your part. The rest of us can cope with some dead links.

By the way, is it better to report spam with the little triangular "Report this post" button, or to post in the "Massive spam attacks on the wiki (and forums?)" thread?

Those who frequented the Conwaylife Discord the past few months can tell you that his thought processes are often those of a "troll", with "causing annoyance" a major motivation... which is why it was decided to ban him from there.

Previously, I PMed mods when I saw spam, but then I realised it was better to post a public post about it so you don't have a dozen people PMing the mods about the same spam.
