Can we post non-B3/S23 ships? I have a rule with some pretty impressive smoke plumes.

Hello Kitty Tac

No restrictions! Feel free to put every rule into this. My only concerns are the lack of comparability. we will see!

90 cells from front to back. There are probably bigger ships out there. It doesn't use glider collisions, it's just a natural feature of this rule. I don't know if this counts.

Now we have the question of comparability. My definition of a smoke plume start is the last influence of gliders or smaller Spaceships. Your Generation-Ship provides none of them. If you measure it from head to toe, your hole ship must be a plume. By counting this way the goal of my second spaceship would be 134 instead of 41.

So we must find a more general rule, where the spaceship ends and the smoke begins without having special ships defining it. My proposal would be: The begin of the plume is at the end of hieratic, strongly repetitive structures.

In your case the plume would start after 11 cells and has a lenght of 79. Agreed?

Imagine the ship as a structure in three dimensions, with time as the third dimension. Say that a path of live cells is connected if each one is adjacent to the one before it, including diagonally. Then say a live cell is part of the plume if there's some future generation such that every connected path from that live cell to a cell alive in that future generation must go backward in time.

to Macbi:
I get the picture, that the world of life is determined, that all chaos is pseudo-chaos. But that is not the point here, i think. What i want to show with this plumes, heavy smokers, spaceships with long tails, that there is a knowable difference between the constructed repetitiveness of a mwss, the seemingly random flow in the plume and the nothing - in our case. What i want are "free" flows between repetitiveness and nothing as big as possible - in space as in time-

Would a high-period rake that constructs a diehard be disqualified, on the grounds of ... I don't know... being too artificial, or some such? It's possible to design spaceships with arbitrarily high periods and arbitrarily long tails, but at some point the trailing stuff stops looking like simple smoke.

A diehard like Golly's Patterns/Miscellaneous/die658.rle seems like a kind of ambiguous case -- it's constructible by T=80 by the latest, so that's 570 ticks where it sure looks like smoke, but it would be deliberately constructed smoke. Would that count as a ~285-cell-long plume, or no?

In this case there should be a new rule balancing out the cycles of the Dye Hard and the long periode. It always remains the well structured period within the dying dyehards. From that standpoint my first smoker in this threat should be disqualified. On the other hand. Why limiting us. I want to see, how long it gets.

Let's bring structure into this competition.

1. There is only competition between patterns of the same rule system.
2. Within there are 2 different ways:
Classic: Only 1 cloud connected to the spaceship
Freestyle: Not Classic!!!

So, at thr end there will be many winners of this competition.
