Find a non-explosive B1e rule WHERE LINEAR GROWTH IS RARE

Post by testitemqlstudop » June 4th, 2019, 9:36 am

...since B1c is impossible.

(Condition added since B1e/S12 isn't what I had in mind.)

Ready? Go!

Depends on your definition of explosive, but B1e/S12 is pretty much limited to linear growth - present for (nearly) all soups. There's also the occasional linear replicator thrown in for variety.

Edit: It appears to be barely apgsearchable at just under 1 soup/s, but I wouldn't bother uploading a haul because it's sure to be pretty boring.

My best attempt (not a particularly good one, but it illustrates a potential path for constructing such a rule):

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B1e2ce3eny4jkr5cny6c/S2n3cnq4n

Not particularly, as far as I can tell — the added B8 transition doesn't actually seem to kill off any of the problematic chaotic growth engines that keep emerging.

B1e2-an3ejkry4ejkrtwy5ceny6ce7c/S3-aejr4cknqty5ejk6e (I'm not sure how many of those transitions are legacy transitions resulting from the semi-DFS rule tweaking):

Guns are pretty common (there's a 2-barrel one in the above soup) but they don't really do much aside from create intricate B-type machine-like structures.

EDIT: 4c/12 diagonal rake which probably makes some infinite-novelty-type stuff:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 7, rule = B1e2-an3ejkry4ejkrtwy5ceny6ce7c/S3-aejr4cknqty5ejk6e

EDIT2: IceNine (I haven't read Cat's Cradle yet but I know that's what it's from):

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 18, rule = B1e2-an3ejkry4ejkrtwy5ceny6ce7c/S3-aejr4cknqty5ejk6e

Both IceNine and the diagonal rakes can be killed by adding B6n, but the guns are still there.
Any sufficiently advanced software is indistinguishable from malice.

Removing S5e and adding B3c to the original rule eliminates the IceNine as well as a troublesome C orthogonal triple rake while keeping the p2 that can eat photons:

Code: Select all

Hmm, even one soup with a single p6 gun can take apgluxe v5.x almost a minute to census. I'm really not sure what's going on there.

Perhaps 1.x will be quicker for these kinds of rules?

With the default settings it doesn't fare too well either. With relaxed stabilisation parameters I managed to get up to ~1 soup/s. After about 1k soups the census consisted of flotillae of p1 and p2 photons, various p6 guns, and the p34 gun.

Weird unexplained glider formations:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 1, rule = B1e2-an3ejkry4ejkrtwy5ceny6ce7c/S3-aejr4cknqty5aejk
o!
The closest I've got is this rule, which has a semi-common gun, and some annoying, stupid rakes that I hate with a passion:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B1e2-an3ejkry4cjkrw5ceny6c7c/S2i3cknqy4cknqty5ej6ce
o2$2o$obo$b2o!
In addition, in this rule, no formation of two dots will create a gun, no matter how hard you try.

EDIT: Engineered p16 gun / osc:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 23, rule = B1e2-an3ejkry4cjkrw5ceny6c7c/S2i3cknqy4cknqty5ej6ce

Oooh, Dani's rule is great. In apgluxe 5 it clocks in at ~60 soups/second (4 cores). So far apgluxe hasn't found a natural YL, so I guess this wins (for now, until someone finds a rule with quicker apgsearch speed.)

I have reasons to think that apgluxe's YL detection is both b3s23-specific and profoundly slow, because for both non-explosive b2a, b1e, and an assortment of other rules, apgsearch spends a horrible amount of time just catagoling YL.

EDIT: SEE?

Code: Select all

b1e2-an3ejkry4cjkrw5ceny6c7cs2i3cknqy4cknqty5ej6ce/C1: 32 soups completed (1.396 soups/second current, 1.396 overall).

The 1p->3p was 1st in my tech collection

I think conduitry and half-omniP (i.e. all even periods) is possible, given the p2 reflector.
