I was hoping for something unusual for a change, for 'dvgrn'. I guess it could have been worse than a clean 18-tick teardrop predecessor:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory

If you type xp0_"any string" in catagolue's object search you will see what the string encodes.

When I enter my name PAULC in 7-segment letters, it turns into a glider-producing switch engine.

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
3ob3obobobo3b3o$obobobobobobo3bo$3ob3obobobo3bo$o3bobobobobo3bo$o3bobo
b3ob3ob3o2$2o2b2ob7o2b2o!
Whoa! How did that happen? I must be very special! ;) (Pay no attention to the little dots at the bottom.)

Let me see what I can do with my username pcallahan and the official font for this thread.

Code: Select all

x = 53, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
4o3b3o3b3o2bo5bo6b3o2bo3bo2b3o2b2o2bo$o3bobo3bobo3bobo5bo5bo3bobo3bobo

x0_Moosey:

Saved by a capital letter (x0_moosey dies out)

The 7 segment "font" is a good bit easier to reproduce by hand. I also need to remember where to put the 3 tweak bits. I have not tried PCALLAHAn in 7 segments. That would be easier to remember (besides the tweaked PAULC, though that collides with another Life enthusiast).

Good point. Infinite growth is interesting, after all.
Have you tried a Simkin glider gun? All you need to memorize are the position of the block triplets relative to the starting Herschel.

(And by the way, I was kind of surprised when I first saw you on the forums - my 6th grade (and the grade I'm currently in) has a ELA teacher called Ms.Callahan)

It's a surprisingly common name and I tend to notice it when it comes up in movies, like Dirty Harry Callahan. There's a Professor Callaghan in Big Hero 6, but I don't know if he counts with the variant spelling (it is the same Irish name).

I used to be a lot more active in the Life community and you will find my name on some of the patterns in the Lexicon. I also had one of the first Life web pages, started in 1995, now mothballed here courtesy of Tomas Rokicki.

One more entry and no more silliness. My username in a custom "font" with no extra cells but some wiggles to get it to make a switch engine.
