Some tweaks down to 9G:

Is this from-the-front LWSS inserter known?

I was not aware of that one, but the standard 3-glider method works just as well. Both insert at the minimum possible separation. Here are the other LWSS, MWSS, and HWSS syntheses I know that can insert spaceships at minimum separation (14, 16, and 18 generations respectively). Two had to be slightly tweaked:

A more compact p138, although it's still no record-breaker, I'm sure:

On a related note, where can I find relatively-current versions of the gun collection?

chris_c's collection on GitHub is pretty darn current, and fairly easy to go look things up in -- you don't have to download the whole collection to find a specific gun.

(For the variable guns you might have to make some adjustments to get an actual gun pattern, though. That would be a good low-priority project if someone wanted to tackle it, building out actual RLE for each gun period up to 1000 where there isn't an entry in the fixed folder.)

If you just want to see if a newly built gun is better than what's in the collection, just multiply the all-phases bounding box length times width and check that against the number for that period, in the README on the landing page.

I swear I've seen this before. Wasn't it utilized in one of Guam's spark-to-G converters, or something along those lines? (Good work if you [re?]found it on your own, by the way :D)

EDIT: perhaps it was brought up in a discussion thread relating to said converters? Unfortunately I can't find anything with the forum search (partially due to "glider" being ignored as too common, lol), but if anyone else is curious I very clearly remember one post in said thread containing both of Guam's converters

It's probably been found before, but I was just playing around and noticed this. I was particularly bugged because I couldn't clean the second beehive.

Less weird than you'd think:

I saw the topic Making switch-engines and took my breeder to make this.
x = 36, y = 23, rule = B3/S23
25b2o$24bo2bo6b2o$25b2o7b2o12$18b3o5$3o27bo$2bo26bobo$bo27bobo$30bo!

This is surely known.

One block more prevents the most waste.

x = 36, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

One blinker more instead you get a glider-making switch-engine.

At least here they are listed as 4 glider synthesis in
http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/glider-4.htm
But here the switch engine is listed as 4Gsynthesis even though 3 is known (http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Switch_engine).
Also the wiki states them as 4 glider synthesis (http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Thunderbird, http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Acorn) For Multum in parvo it is not stated (http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Multum_in_parvo)

Additionally I found a 3 glider synthesis for 7468M:
x = 12, y = 23, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o3$b3o$3bo$2bo13$9b3o$9bo$10bo!

and Thompson's 6-bit methuselah
x = 12, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o3$4b2o$3b2o$5bo$10bo$9b2o$9bobo!

For the 7468M no synthesis is reported, for the latter one only a 6G synthesis.

Edit 10/25/2017: And 3 gliders for the mango-glider mess (with a natural pentadecathlon)
x = 20, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

I don't believe so, but the synthesis wiki hasn't been updated in quite some time (I think waiting for a robust way to handle new records semi-automatically) and the Methuselah section in particular hasn't really had much attention paid to it; most synthesis attempts are focused on still-lifes and oscillators.

I know of one different 3-glider synthesis for Thunderbird, found by Extrementhusiast on 2015-07-04. All the others are improvements. Very nice! I was not aware of 7468M; I will add it. I am trying to list all important methuselahs below 10 bits. (Unfortunately, I've been somewhat mind-bogglingly slow in updating my site, but things are starting to come together, it shouldn't be that much longer.)

I know of one different 3-glider synthesis for Thunderbird, found by Extrementhusiast on 2015-07-04.

I am working on the enumeration of all 3G reactions, and I got all the results by looking at the ashes. The mentioned reactions are only representatives, for some there are multiple options. For the Thunderbird I have e.g.:
x = 334, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
71bo$69b2o$70b2o3$4bobo198bobo48b2o3b2o$5b2o198b2o48bobo2b2o70bo$5bo
200bo50bo4bo70bo$b2o65bo255bobo4b3o$obo66bo64bo190b2o$2bo64b3o62b2o62b
obo58b2o66bo$8bo124b2o61b2o59bobo71bo$7b2o130bo57bo59bo72b2o$7bobo58b
3o66b2o191bobo$70bo62b3o2b2o$69bo63bo64b3o$134bo63bo$199bo!

The first one follows if a glider crashed into a honey farm reaction. The second one is the example I have shown which really creates the 6-bit Thunderbird.

An exhaustive examination of all 3G reaction has, to the best of my knowledge, never been done. Dave Buckingham did a fairly comprehensive study of them back around the 1980s or so, but the fact that occasional new 3-glider syntheses have come up over the past few decades (e.g. pentadecathlon, bi-pond, infinite growth, and switch engine, plus the ones you posted here) show that he didn't find all of them.

There are three things I'm personally particularly interested in with regards to 3 glider collisions, which haven't really been studied in depth - syntheses of pseudo-still-lifes (because few people care about them, so they are frequently overlooked), constellations of 2 objects (because these are frequently used in larger syntheses, and making 2 at once can save a glider or two off the recipe), and 3-glider syntheses of certain useful sparks - hopefully with no additional debris, although in some cases, the sparks can be useful enough that an additional cleanup glider or two can be tolerated.

I have a few hundred sparks (mostly from Buckingham's research), and around a thousand constellations (mostly from mine), but those aren't very well organized, and come from haphazard, rather than systematic research.

There are a lot of people who will be interested in this. You should discuss your methods in this topic. Someone might be able to give some helpful suggestions. Personally, I'm curious how you plan to deal with the 2-glider collisions that release gliders (e.g., 2-glider mess and B-heptominoes).

Hear, hear! For example, do you happen to be able to confirm Extrementhusiast's result that there are 1,546 cases where the three gliders all interact for the first time on the same tick?

Sokwe wrote:Personally, I'm curious how you plan to deal with the 2-glider collisions that release gliders (e.g., 2-glider mess and B-heptominoes).

Luckily there are only a few collisions that do that -- a total of seven, including the three B-heptomino outputs and 2-glider mess that Sokwe mentions, plus the two kickback reactions and the TL+glider reaction. The kickback collisions are relatively easy to get a complete enumeration for, but the B-heptominoes and the others seem fairly painful.

Even an enumeration that excludes the toughest cases would be really useful. @2718281828, does your analysis start from two-glider collisions, or are you using some other method?

It looks like you've recorded a good large subset of three-glider collisions already, to find those methuselah syntheses. Does anything happen to have the ash signature of this part of a loafer recipe?

x = 39, y = 31, rule = LifeHistory
38.C$36.2C$37.2C$14.C$15.C$4.C.C6.3C$5.2C$5.C5$29.D.D$30.2D$30.D2$32.
D.D$32.2D$33.D$36.3D$36.D$37.D5$.C$.2C$C.C6.C$9.2C$8.C.C!

Seems like sorting things out based on the ash will work really well in some cases, but not so well if someone is looking to replace, say, expensive sparks in a glider recipe with cheaper sparks. If you have to look through all reactions that end with zero population, that doesn't narrow the field very much...

Given a good database of three-glider collisions, though, it should be possible to reprocess and re-index it in all kinds of different ways.

Edit: I fixed your quotation formatting. -Sokwe

If I got it correctly the relevant part of the 5 glider reaction is
x = 9, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
b2o4b2o$o2b2ob3o$bobo$2bo!

I looked for the resulting ash (including symmetries) in my 3G collision files, but the result is negative. And I should have almost all 3G collisions, only 'a couple' of late interacting 2glider mess+third glider (after more than 500 generations) are missing, but they very like won't produce this pattern.

Nice work, this is very interesting!
Instead of reducing the loafer synthesis, perhaps we could try reducing the copperhead synthesis. I tried and failed to reduce it using 3 glider collisions, but I'm wondering if we can with a more complete set. So do you have any collisions that creates these patterns?:

x = 111, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
53b2o3b2o$52bobo3bobo$51b2o7b2o45bo$2b2o48b2o5b2o45b3o$b4o48bo5bo45b2o

55b2o!

Note: The first two should give a reduced synthesis, but the third will not definitely (I have actually already found some collisions for the third, but none of them are compatible with the copperhead synthesis).

the third will not definitely (I have actually already found some collisions for the third, but none of them are compatible with the copperhead synthesis).

For this I have found these four different options:

x = 10, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
7bo$8bo$6b3o3$8bo$3o4b2o$2bo4bobo$bo!

x = 7, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
o$b2o$2o2$4bobo$4b2o$5bo5$5b2o$4b2o$6bo!

x = 7, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o3$3bobo$3b2o$4bo7$5b2o$4b2o$6bo!

x = 8, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo4bo$3o2b2o$6b2o2$b2o$2b2o$bo!
