Thanks. I didn't know about these two. Does anyone have a definitive list of small spaceships? Other than spaceships with known syntheses, I was going by pentadecathlon.com, the wiki, and trivial extrapolations and combinations of smaller 2c/4 ships.

Can this eater-tie-beehive be placed as close as it is? I don't want to dig through Catagolue for edgy syntheses if we already know how to do that.

This is great! It would allow synthesis of the one problematic eater block frob, and potentially most larger ones where the frob still-life cannot be added in place. Unfortunately, all the ways I know of to make the activating still-life (13.238) come from the other side, so a better way will need to be found.

To make this specific to just this one synthesis, the frob still-life (14.294) could probably be added, but again, any way I know of to do so requires going through the eater still-life (which is why this one synthesis remains unsolved). It was particularly difficult, as the frob still-life must be created in one step, fully capable of eating the moment the head appears. With this converter, that constraint is removed, so it might be able to form it incrementally.

Hacking at it some more, I've reduced the problem to just growing an eater head into a boat in tight quarters--is there a known component for that?

Do we not already have a synthesis for this that can just have a new component tacked onto it?

I feel like there was an already-known eater-adding component that worked with that -- maybe in the soup search results thread. It might have been an integral with boat, though, but either way it would solve this.

Here it is, unfortunately it's not quite compatible in the SW, although I suspect it could be modified to work with this still-life:

Dithering about on the forums I wound up at the discussion of Rich's p16's discovery and ended up reducing its synthesis by 2 to 14G:

Excellent!

Even though this is not directly related, this prompted me to re-examine all my eater block frob
variant syntheses and to update them to be synthesized from as many directions as possible
(i.e. cheapest, starting with frob, starting with block, starting with frob+block).
I hadn't previously considered the ones starting with the eater, but it turns out that integral w/up boat can easily be added in place, and doing it this way actually reduces many of the syntheses, using this converter:

Code: Select all

x = 78, y = 20, rule = B3/S23

Of the 24 syntheses up to 24 bits, 12 are improved. I haven't finished the 25-bit ones yet, but some of those are also improved.
AforAwesome wrote:I feel like there was an already-known eater-adding component that worked with that -- maybe in the soup search results thread. It might have been an integral with boat, though, but either way it would solve this.
There are several; unfortunately, of the 62 oscillators I know of up to 25 bits, all could be built with one of those except for this one, as the hook on the frob part got too close to the eater in every case.

Is this 4-glider component known? Mark Niemiec's Search displays no glider synthesis for the resulting still life (although it would presumably be trivial) but this reaction seems too simple to be unknown EDIT: It's also apparently not in Extrementhusiast's component database:

The typical way to add this component takes only 3 gliders:

True, but the new reaction fits in some places the 3-glider method doesn't:

Flipping the first two gliders around results in even more clearance:

Nice! Is this alternate 4-glider eater-adding component (the one on the left) known? I don't think it improves anything, it just has a bit more clearance that the one on Mark Niemiec's search:

Code: Select all

x = 53, y = 15, rule = LifeHistory

I already had that step; what is missing is the underlying still-lifes.
In fact, syntheses of these should give them all:

Code: Select all

x = 86, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

Sorry for that misconception. To make up for it, here is a final step for the second still-life above:

Code: Select all

x = 49, y = 26, rule = B3/S23

I wasn't able to make a full synthesis from that, but this is how I was planning on doing it:
