Weekender Reactions: Building a 2c/7 Puffer

Postby Sphenocorona » December 9th, 2013, 11:32 pm

As far as I know, there are no puffers for the speed 2c/7. The Weekender does have sparks which can be used to perturb objects; while weak, there are multiple spark points with different benefits. Here is a possible reaction for restarting the reaction, with the LWSS as the starter and two weekenders to catalyse it:
x = 34, y = 19, rule = B3/S23

6b4o8b3o$2b4o4b4o4bo2bo$18bo$4bo6bo6bo$5b2o2b2o8bo!

So, post reactions that might be useful here, and eventually there might be enough to build a puffer :)

A simple manual search shows some possible perturbations of a single weekender and a glider. In particular, the traffic light looks ripe for further exploitation.

With all those weak spark points, maybe it's time to have a fresh look at asymmetric pushalongs and tagalongs, too -- see if something turns up with stronger sparks on an outside edge.

The only known tagalong is symmetric, and it was found over a decade ago, not long after the weekender itself; looks like it has one vaguely usable spark, but it's close behind the weekenders so pretty inaccessible. But with any luck, Moore's Law will have put a bigger chunk of search space within reach by now!

Here are Jason Summers' notes from 14 January 2000 on survivable collisions with a weekender -- not an exhaustive list, but a good start:

Maybe the next thing is to see whether weekender sparks are good enough to clean up the junk left by the messy Herschel output at the left of this last lineup. Looks like it may be hard to tease a usable forward LWSS out of random debris with the available tools, though.

The weekender cannot interact with common still-lifes without being destoyed, though it can clean up blinkers.
x = 21, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
3o2$6bo12bo$6bo12bo$5bobo10bobo$6bo12bo$6bo12bo$7bo3b4o3bo$11b4o$7b4o
4b4o2$9bo6bo$10b2o2b2o!

Thus the only way to make a self-sustaining reaction loop with weekenders is to build conduits. Since the weekender interacts with gliders too quickly and creates no sparks, the next easiest way to ignite the reaction is to use spaceships. Colliding a HWSS with the weekender can produce pi:
x = 16, y = 27, rule = B3/S23

The next step should be finding conduits made of weekenders, that would fire gliders, that should in turn synthesise a HWSS and restart the reaction.

MWSS -> Pi:

This reaction is not quite usable, because the pi is too close to the weekenders. Actually, it doesn't matter much, which of *WSS you use, because all of them can be synthesised with 3 gliders, unless you find a good direct synthesis for LWSS or MWSS.

It appeared to be quite hard to find clean Herschel conduits, especially without those annoying blocks left over from B-heptominoes. So far I've found only a few.

Tail-up H -> Down H (here and further I assume that blinkers can be cleaned up whenever appropriate):
x = 24, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

And here is my favourite. Though it does the same transformation as the previous one, but it appears to be less obtrusive. It is also quite important, that it has all weekenders on one side. It may happen to be very helpful for shifting the reaction away from the igniter spaceship track, because there should be no weekenders on its way.

Maybe it makes sense to come back to Pi conduits again and try to find some with side-product gliders.

codeholic wrote:This reaction is not quite usable, because the pi is too close to the weekenders.

There are ways to ignite a reaction with a LWSS or a MWSS, though it may require more weekenders in the beginning. Here is an example:
x = 58, y = 47, rule = B3/S23

An important thing that might be crucial for synthesising an igniter spaceship is conduit bifurcation. I'm not even sure yet, how to approach this problem. AFAIK, there are no appropriate search programs out there for that kind of thing. Twin centuries are quite common (thanks to the queen bee), but I haven't tried century conduits yet, and honestly I don't expect them to be very promising (though I may be mistaked easily).

Excellent! This puffer ejects a LOT of ships, it would make a good rake... if it could be cleaned.$
By the way, it's time to update the life status.

Thank you all for congratulations.

towerator wrote:This puffer ejects a LOT of ships, it would make a good rake... if it could be cleaned.

Unfortunately it is hardly possible. The final explosion produces too much junk, before it emits an LWSS, to be cleaned up with weekenders (remember, passing-by weekenders cannot perturb still lifes).

If one found an explosion that produces an LWSS without producing so much junk, one could probably clean it up, but I think synthesising an LWSS from gliders is a much more promising approach. But it still needs conduit bifurcation to be discovered. (Luckily the reaction flow for the puffer could be linear.)

Couldn't you take two of those puffers in parallel and use the gliders ejected by the one to at least reduce the exhaust of the others?

Probably one could collide exhausts in a way, that they would supress each other, but I don't believe it can significantly reduce total amount of exhaust without damaging LWSS production. At least, not for this explosion.

Another idea would be to create the upward LWSS with the help of exhaust gliders of puffer pairs...

In order to do so, you would need to create two lightweight spaceships, one for each puffer in a pair, that makes it quite tricky.

Imagine two symmetric 2c/7 puffers similar to yours.

glider from left puffer + debris from right puffer -> right upward LWSS
glider from right puffer + debris from left puffer -> left upward LWSS

I assume there will be some timing constraints.

Now I see what you mean. It could be an option, if one found exhaust, that would be a relatively clean stable LWSS seed. I thought about this option as well (though I didn't think of a pair of puffers, thus it would require bifurcation).

But in this case one should probably use the glider for igniting the seed not from the exhaust, but from the conduit path, because this way it is more versatile. And also puffers in the pair probably should not be symmetric in order to avoid collision of seed igniter gliders, if one wants to use the same seed.

Another option can be building an LWSS with a slow salvo. (Does anyone know the shortest recipe?)

You're completely correct! I was thinking on Jason Summers old 2c/5 puffer design:

x = 125, y = 89, rule = B3/S23

That's symmetric, but switches between left wing and right wing, so effectively it's glide symmetric!

But he had several base ships to select from. Not as cumbersome as working with only one.

Oh, this is a very nice idea. It's a shame, that I didn't hit upon it myself. Here is a much simpler p6622 puffer using this design:
x = 178, y = 48, rule = B3/S23

Thanks for implementing this so quickly!!!

Jason has to review his status page, and he can even add this pattern to his collection!

This is wonderful! I'm sure making a LWSS with a slow salvo would work for making a rake. Have a forward glider get transformed by a weekender into a salvo target, and then have a long conduit shoot more gliders at it until a LWSS is produced.

Meanwhile, I have a proposal for what the next speed to be investigated for puffers should be.
