I don't know why you'd think that's a bad thing, because I really enjoy symmetrical soup searches, you can find some very interesting results that usually won't show up in standard soups.

I've been doing soup searches recently with a modified version of apgsearch, which includes a few things:

  • The hashsoup() function returns the soup as a cell list, rather than placement directly, so it can be used to create proper temporary soup files.
  • Includes the ~9000 common names dict, plus a few more additions of my own(primarily symmetric objects).
  • The inclusion of symmetry options, including a prompt for it after rule selection, addition to the latest_census.html file, and the search_(...).txt file at the top, so you know which files have certain symmetry options or not.
Most likely later today, I'll explain more on how the symmetries are handled in the main apgsearch thread, and I'll include the mentioned hacked version of the script.

Shuriken literally means a shuriken (Japanese throwing weapon, a metal star), which the pattern resembles. I was going to call feisty rat king since it looked like the tails of four rats joined together, but since the stator was four snakes which looked like they were fighting I gave the current name instead.
