Yup, if you don't mind knocking out the first natural glider with an extra glider, that's just a plain old Herschel plus 22 ticks:

Anyway, that synthesis is quite messy so having those other syntheses from gmc_nxtman and chris_c is good and gives me more options.

Thankyou :)

On 2015-10-12 (page 28), chris_c posted several improved syntheses which I have in my updated database, but which still haven't been updated on the web site:
The first (this one) from 9 gliders. This new one is an improvement!
The second (fox) from 9 gliders, one less than the new one.
The fourth (by flops) from 11 gliders, one less than the new one.
(However, in retrospect, your 8-glider synthesis of why not (see next paragraph) reduced this to 10, as 2 gliders can remove one bit. I hadn't noticed this before, but this post brought it to light!)

Also: The third one (hexapole) from 10 gliders by chris_c and later reduced to 9 by BlinkerSpawn on 2016-08-23, so the new one from 8 is better. (This improves 52 syntheses, and affects secondary syntheses for 5 others (all larger barber poles, and all pseudo-barber poles)!
The fifth also from 12 gliders by Extrementhusiast on 2015-01-05.
The sixth (why not) is the same one you posted on 2016-08-23.
The seventh from 11 gliders by me on 2015-10-05 (page 27).

All in all, 3 improved syntheses (plus 51 derived ones) is pretty good!

There appear to be two new soups to make this unnamed 16-bit flip flop (muttering moat 1 w/long middle arm): http://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp2 ... 3201/b3s23 which suggest the following method, which might be plausible. Perhaps it could also be altered to make muttering moat 1, which has yet to emerge from any soup:

Code: Select all

Why are these so common? The back spark should make it unstable enough to get destroyed by a stray pi or something

Two 16 cell, period 2 oscillators, in 9 and 12 gliders respectively.

The second (quad) (originally 16 gliders by Dave Buckingham) was replaced by a 12-glider synthesis by Kayzan from a soup on 2015-12-28, reduced the next day to 11 by Extrementhusiast and 10 by me. Yours uses exactly the same mechanism.

The first (griddle w/tub and feather) was first synthesized from 77 gliders by Extrementhusiast on 2013-12-10, then the next day reduced by me to 74, and by Sokwe to 68. Yours is a dramatic improvement. Congratulations!

Wasn't sure whether to post this in Useless Discoveries or here, but it is an APGsearch thing after all. Soup produces a new sort of tetraloaf where all the loaves are all joined end to end in a line:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
bo2b4ob3obobo$ob3o2bob3obobo$3b2o3b4o$bo3bo3b3o$o2bo3bo2b3obo$3bo6bo2b

bob4o$b2obob3o2b5o$b2obob2o2bobo$b3o2bo2b2o4bo$3bo2b5obo2bo!
Not sure if this yields any possibilities for a synthesis, or if there's ways of synthesising this already.

Partway through the pattern reduces to this:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
7bo$6b3o$6b2obo$2b2o2b2ob3o$bobo2b2o3bo$2o$bobo$2b2o!
The pi in this pattern can be obtained via activating a bi-block with a domino easily; the active pattern on the right is the only difficulty here.
Alternate method:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = B3/S23
9bo$8b3o$2b2o3b5o$2b3ob5o$3bo3b3o$8bo$3bo$2b3o$b5o$5o$b3o$2bo!

I have improved all the syntheses of 14-bit still-lifes that their syntheses listen on mniemiec’s website took greater or equal to one glider per bit, except for one. Here are the ten:

I'm not sure which ones are new records. Some of these can probably be improved by synthesising multiple objects at once.

Very nice! All are new records except one. #2 (14.100) and #4 (14.352) can be reduced by 1 by combining two steps (rows 1+2). However, I had previously found a 10-glider synthesis of 14.352 on 2016-03-07 (row 3). There are now only two remaining 14-bit still-lifes costing 14 gliders: 14.618 and 14.191 (row 4). These syntheses also improve the derived 15.544, 15.873, 15.45, 15.70, 15.419, 15.624, 15.502, 15.503, 3 candelfrobras, 15.952, and 15.653 (row 5).

Code: Select all

x = 223, y = 131
