Dave Greene has just found a 42100 generation methuselah. (no, that's not a typo)

Generation 36 has the smallest population (46 cells): x = 26, y = 16, rule = B3/S2316b3o2$21b3o2$12b2o11bo$13bobo7b3o$15b2o7bo2$5b3o3$3o5bo10b3o$3o4bobo10bobo$6bo2bo6bob2o2bo$7b2o10b2o$16b2o! So that might be a place to start the process of minimization. Although maybe it's not worth putting lots of effort into minimization if we're soon going to have a flood of new records. Call me insensitive, but I have an initial name suggestion of Patricia, as it beat out the previous named record holder of Wilma (mentioned here) by a surprisingly large margin. (Well, there's also 40514M, but that's only a designation, so let's conveniently ignore it here.) (Note: this suggestion is somewhat sarcastic, so feel free to ignore it, but after Sir Robin, who knows anymore? I sure don't.) Yes, I do like watching tropical cyclones; why do you ask? Here is a 42-glider synthesis. This might be slightly reduced if the initial contellation of 4 blocks can be made more cheaply; it definitely looks familiar.

In my 3g collisions there is no synthesis of these 4 blocks. however, there is one fitting collision for a block+ship constellation (in a 8x3) box which might be useful. (nothing for the 4x7 option). This allows us to get 3/4 of the inner ship-block circle for 9g (just the last step):
x = 13, y = 15, rule = B3/S23obo$b2o$bo3bo$4bo$4b3o$2bo$3bo$b3o6b2o$10b2o3$2o4b2o$obo3b2o3b2o$b2o7bobo$10b2o!

if we can get the remaining block and ship for less than 9g we have an improvement.

I don't see a way to improve it, unless someone finds a 4g way to get the centre at once.

The rotor is not listed in jslife.

The rotor can be reduced in several ways:

None of the discussion has utilized the original soup in any way (except the first post). I know I sound like a broken record, and it wouldn't matter for most people, but when updating the pattern collections it would be nice to have all relevant discussion in one place. It will be hard work scouring this nearly 2000-post thread for the few oscillators that were posted here. 2718281828 wrote:Is this p10 known?... The rotor is not listed in jslife.
