Not looking like it, after checking through the new Herschel Conduits thread.

I've updated this thread's first post with the latest up-to-datest H-to-G collection, based on one complete pass through the New Herschel Conduits thread. I haven't ventured back into Accidental Discoveries or anywhere else, and could well have made mistakes or omissions in building H-to-Gs out of H-to-X and X-to-G combinations.

I probably won't get back to this project again for a month or more, due to an upcoming move to Madison, Wisconsin... so if anyone wants to take over adding H-to-Gs, or making an automatic compiler for the H-to-G stamp collection, now would be a fine time.

I'm hoping the script-generated labels meet with everyone's approval, and that they can serve as standard names for the various H-to-Gs. I did include multiple versions of a number of converters, so if they each get their own file then presumably the name will become, e.g., SW-2T21A, SW-2T21B, C, D, etc.

I included a number of H-to-2Gs and H-to-3Gs, and one H-to-4G, with multiline labels. These can all be easily converted to plain H-to-Gs, of course, but this way I can run through and pick out all the H-to-G(n) tandem glider generators. I'll do a quick update of that collection in the next week or two.

The label-generation code is still hiding in Sokwe's update of chris_c's conduit compiler, so I'm terribly tempted to go through and add #N lines to all those RLE files, giving similar standard IDs for each of the elementary conduits. That would make it easy to refer to composite conduits and composite H-to-Gs by stringing together elementary labels.

Nice! I see all the recent H->Gs as well, many thx for your effort.

I was wondering maybe it's better to place eater in all the other output lanes, and place the same basic H->G converter in multiple spots.

We have H->G on NW36 which is also NW19 and NW53. Now if I go to NW53 I see totally different option.

I mean - probably if I would need some NW I will go over all the options, and see what fits, so It won't be hard to find, but it could be confusing.

Also many times I don't really care about the specific lane relative to H and more about the general direction. We still don't have spartan NE+SE. So just pairs of directons (16 in total), could be very beneficial addition.

Another point is differentiate spartan circuits or at least near spartan or say "light weigh" H->G from heavy weight. If we count non spartan by the SLs they require to generate (like eater2 is 6 SL), and say we want H->G under 10 SL. I mean some sort by weight will be also nice (If we had extra colors I would say green for light weight (up to 6 SLs), yellow for middle weight (7-14), and red for heavy weight (15+).

Yes, the current system isn't quite right. If we switch over at some point to a compiler script like the one for elementary conduits, and a folder full of separate RLE pattern, then it might make sense to always include separate patterns for, let's say, an H-to-3G and each of the three individual H-to-Gs.

That way whichever glider you're looking up, you know you have the option of two more glider outputs.

A separate pattern for each possible combination of two or three gliders seems like overkill, though -- ten extra combinations for the H-to-4G.

For both of these I'd suggest that it's worth getting the relevant statistics for all these H-to-Gs into a database of some sort -- maybe just additional comments along with the name at the top of the RLE file?

Then when the compiler script is building a stamp collection, it can offer a few sorting and filtering options. If you only want to see the Spartan H-to-Gs, or the ones with less than 40 ON cells, or the ones with recovery time below 128, then the resulting stamp collection won't include the slower/heavier/non-Spartan conduits. But you can recompile any time you want to see the other ones.

Great work with the update!

I noticed two H-to-Gs I've posted recently were missing from the collection, so I've made a scan through the threads "H-to-G and H-to-2G converter collection" and "The Hunting of the New Herschel Conduits" from the start of the threads up until today, and I found a few more that could possibly be added:

Also, I noticed a few converters that's been put in the wrong place in the grid:
- SW4T376 is placed as SW-4
- NW2T132 is placed as NW3
- SE43T320 is placed as SE42

Just to be clear, those were found by Guam a few years ago.

I noticed two H-to-Gs I've posted recently were missing from the collection, so I've made a scan through the threads "H-to-G and H-to-2G converter collection" and "The Hunting of the New Herschel Conduits" from the start of the threads up until today, and I found a few more that could possibly be added...
#5 and #6 I had skipped over because of the note about "can only follow F171". Thought I might add those along with a lot of other composite H-to-H-to-G, in a second stage of lane-hunting.

Looking at it again, though, I notice that that H-to-G can also accept a strange upside-down R input, and we actually have a conduit with that output R:

So I added to the collection both options, F171 and HLx111R, for both H-to-G variants, even though they're mostly outside of the current grid. Seems as if that optional SW-28T46 output can probably be used to suppress junk in some other almost-working conduit.

That would mean a horribly high repeat time, of course. I might remove those conduits again in the next (automated Python-script compiler) version of the collection. They would all seem a little more useful if a Herschel signal could be extracted after that transparent boat.
simeks wrote:Also, I noticed a few converters that's been put in the wrong place in the grid...
Fixed those -- mostly they were artifacts of the SE/NW lane renumbering.

Many thanks for the thorough review! The first post is updated again now. EDIT: And again, at the end of the day today, to go along with an update to the H-to-G(n) collection. There were two downloads this morning, so if your copy doesn't say "PM", please download again...!

There's now a much more complete H-to-Gn stamp collection in the second post in this thread, as I mentioned yesterday.

The main new item is not really that exciting but I'm excited anyway: it's easy to make Spartan or almost-Spartan adjustable glider-pair emitters for G10 and above, just by combining any H conduit that has a forward glider output with the appropriate small G4 or G5 converter plus a loaf2GtoG:

Code: Select all

x = 322, y = 128, rule = LifeHistory

No doubt there are a lot more "fixed" H-to-Gn tandem glider generators out there, especially composite ones. I've been through and added to the stamp collection all the H-to-Gn converters that anyone has posted recently, along with all the ones that I found on a review of the new H-to-G collection.

I can't remember offhand if there are any other Spartan conduits that put out a Herschel and a forward glider. I know one of Guam's conduits makes a nice forward glider, but there was something complicated about it... So next I think we really need a fresh Herschel-conduit stamp collection, preferably one generated by a script similar to the one for elementary conduits.

It might make sense to start by auto-stamp-collectifying the contents of the current Hersrch data folder. Unfortunately that has gotten way out of date all of a sudden. Maybe someone will finally get around to writing an H-to-H recognizer script that can take an unknown new conduit as input, and automatically generate most of the statistics needed for Hersrch's data.ini... but if the someone has to be me, don't count on it being any time soon!

EDIT: Here's another way to get an adjustable G(n), with two possible timings for the second glider (thanks to semi-Snark block positioning as usual). The Spartan version is a little silly-looking, but it could be a nice option for continuing a signal, especially if a B or R or H output could be found to replace the B -> C -> G converter part.

Here's one. Quite comptact but not spartan.

I'll add that to the H-to-G and H-to-Gn collections. It's yet another new timing of ambidextrous Herschel transmitter, and even pretty close to Spartan if you replace the big catalyst with a couple of blocks.

The eater-tie-eater catalyst is conveniently far away from everything else; not sure if we have good slow recipes for all orientations of it yet, but I seem to remember at least some good recipes have been found that would work here. (?)

Here's one. Quite comptact but not spartan.
I found a smaller and faster H-to-G1. Not spartan, but here's a link to that still-life in Catagolue:

Edit: This SE16T100 H-to-G shows up too. We already have a SE16T36 (on the right), so it's a known lane and mod-8 timing, just a 64 ticks delay:

I need an H-to-G converter that produces its glider just below the FNG, like so:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

The most recently updated H-to-G collection is here.
The glider you wanted is a southwest on lane 10. There are a few listed in the collection, this is the smallest:

Ah, thanks :wink: Can you tell me how the glider numbering system works? (I get G0/G1 means gliders seperated by 0 or 1 lanes but not "lane 10" "lane 21" etc.)

Read the post linked above -- it's all in there. Maybe I should have made it clearer that the center cell of the Herschel, the one with five neighbors, is considered to be at (0,0).
If a canonical-phase glider is centered on the cell (N, 0) then it's on Lane N -- that is, if you run a lane-N glider forwards or backwards in time, there should be a pont where the canonical orientation of the glider is centered around (N,0). This is slightly different from the old NW and SE lane numbers from the 2006 collection, but the same for the old NE and SW lanes.

Indeed, as dvgrn wrote above, the lane numbers describe how the path of the glider is positioned in relation to the Herschel that generated it, like this:

There's no known one-piece SW11. But of course you can string together syringes and Snarks and such to get an SW11, or any lane you want:

Re: H-to-G and H-to-2G converter collection

This may not be a particularly useful idea, but I've gotten to the point of wanting to create standard names for the B-heptomino-to-glider converters in the elementary-conduits collection.

Does it make sense to simply pick a center cell for the B-heptomino, and define output lanes relative to that cell, along the same lines as the H-to-Gs? Nice diagram shamelessly borrowed from simeks:

Or is there some cleverer way of assigning lane numbers that helps the math come out better? Let's say this would be for when we get to the point of writing a search utility to find candidate strings of elementary conduits that put out a glider at a specific spacetime location -- no point in making an arbitrary choice now that will cause big headaches later.

However, I think that all that's needed is to define a center cell for each object. The choice of center is somewhat arbitrary -- it just needs to be consistent, so that (X,Y) offsets can be clearly defined between object types.

Code: Select all

x = 61, y = 21, rule = LifeHistory

Seemed as if the most memorizable location for the wing, century, pi, and glider centers is an OFF cell rather than an ON cell, but that shouldn't matter to a search utility (?). If anyone has strong arguments to make in favor of alternate center locations, now would be a good time.

I think that G and C are best centered at

This might be a distinction without a difference, except that it would change the naming of all C-to-X and X-to-C objects by +1 and -1, respectively. And the names of all the H-to-Gs already collected would also probably have to change by 1 also.

Given that the current "canonical" phase and form of the C is already built into eighteen conduits in the current elementary-conduits collection, and that phase of the glider is implied by many dozens of converter names in the H-to-G and H-to-Gn collections, I'm inclined to not change to a different phase just for the fun of it. I'd certainly be glad if anyone else wanted to make those changes and take over the maintenance of those three collections... but I'm very unlikely to make a change like that for the next release.

The center locations are not set in stone at all, since there are no databases yet that assume one center or another -- but luckily the suggested centers are the same as the ones I posted.

From all my furious working with the Pi heptomino, I'd consider its center to be shifted one cell to the right in the diagram. Everything else looks good.

It's certainly not too late yet to move that center point. So far the place where this choice will matter the most is in assigning canonical names to the pi-to-glider converters in the elementary-conduits collection. Shifting the center to the right will shift the reported output lanes, which look like this at the moment:

It's funny -- I thought that the pi's center would be possibly one of the only uncontroversial ones, because it's a 3x3 pattern that actually has an unambiguous physical center, which is also the center of the common T-1 hexomino predecessor (2o$b2o$2o!).

Are there more votes for moving that center? The cell one cell to the right is certainly the center of the T+1, T+2, and T+3 stages of the pi heptomino. However, "pi heptomino" is named for the T=0 stage, and that's the marker pattern that's currently shown in all the pi-to-X and X-to-pi elementary conduits.

I'd rather not go through and edit all those files to change the pi's reference pattern: seems to me that if I did that, somebody else would probably complain that it was better the way it was. Is there really any downside to just keeping the current center?

Re: H-to-G and H-to-2G converter collection

I've updated H->Gn stamp collection (but without the labels - I placed arrow instead). Four conduits were missing:

1. H->G1 from simeks
2. H->G2 Scorbie (trivial simplification by myself)
3. H->G6 (from main conduit collection)
4. H->G8 (from main conduit collection)
