This almost completely makes semi-snarks and cenarks obsolete in terms of minimum repeat-time when combining it with the original snark and Bandersnatch.
This is a smaller variant in terms of bounding box and is the original version (it also looks better using original variants of catalyst)

This almost completely makes semi-snarks and cenarks obsolete in terms of minimum repeat-time when combining it with the original snark and Bandersnatch.
The Snark64 (newly named by the discoverer after a Discord poll) also simplifies the doubled-signal toolkit quite a bit, getting rid of all the doubled Bandersnatches from the CP adjusters and removing any need for Bandersnatches at all in the CC adjusters.

See the revised first RLE in the link, and please contribute to that thread any clever Bandersnatch-banishing re-timing tricks that I haven't thought of yet. The ideal toolkit has just three compact reflectors-or-doublers in each of the sixteen adjustment units.

I wonder if we could discover new g-to-xs with a new way of searching:
perturb a common active region to a bunch of random ash and then crash active regions into the ash, hoping that the common active region is restored. This could lead to x-to-ys with a bunch of transparent objects, which seemed impossible before

A related idea exists in the context of single-channel recipes (SPEBOE = "standard pi-explodable block or equivalent"). The intermediate unstable object (pi-heptomino) is fixed, but there are different stationary targets with conversions from/to the pi-heptomino.

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

2o$3b2o7bobo7bo2bo6bo2bo6bobo$13bo9b2o7bo2bo6b2o$33b2o!
With "... crash a glider into the ash ...", one would choose an intermediate generation of the initial reaction and try mutiple different catalyses, and then look for ways to hit the resulting ash by a glider so that the chosen phase of the initial reaction appears again in the same place. (As opposed to choosing a specific glider+bait collision and looking for catalyses that restore the chosen bait.)

Using barrister, I found catalyst that cleans up that extra beehive in the setup of the boojum:

Code: Select all

So now we have more g-to-x material! Here's a G-to-R:

EDIT: Ha, I only looked at EvinZL's latest post, and reconstructed everything else that everybody else already knew from higher up the thread, and from Discord about nine hours ago.

That's what happens when really awesome things happen -- I get too excited to check Discord before posting a response.

180 degree 7hd reflector...
No way! That's just a boojum reflector with an improbable new attachment that suppresses the Annoying Beehive, so that the cleanup glider escapes instead of getting used up.

That immediately implies a stable phase-changing color-preserving 4hd shifter based on the glider stopper --
[removed duplicate RLE]
-- and probably even more important, a very useful stable G-to-R based on the Herschel receiver:
[removed more duplicate RLE]

That R output has a level of clearance that most conduits' R outputs can't come close to matching -- but until now, producing that R has always needed a tandem-glider input, which meant that some kind of Herschel transmitter had to be attached at the beginning and the whole thing inevitably ended up huge and slow and bulky and awkwardnessful.

Here are some R-to-G conduits that connect nicely to make boojum reflector variants with different output lane offsets -- an 18hd offset and two 21hd offsets with a 20-tick difference in timing (so they can be used to do 4-mod-8 drop-in adjustments).

I feel like a stable method has a decent chance of being possible because one sparker can be replaced with a ship supported by a fishhook, and the other sparker can spark in multiple positions, one of which could be used by a stable catalyst that would not interact with the active region earlier, but I unfortunately couldn't find any stable catalysts for the bottom interaction. Then again, I don't have Bellman/Barrister.

I've done a couple barrister searches on it, but it doesn't seem like there's a straightforward 90 degree reflector. I did find this 180 degree reflector with CatForce, but it's large and unwieldy.

There's probably some smaller, simpler stuff out there that's within reach of CatForce, but I haven't been able to get mvr's CatForce result filtering script working on conduits with a glider input. So I mostly do 2 catalyst searches, or require 1 to be transparent, just so I don't end up with thousands of results.

EDIT by dvgrn: This is a color-changing reflector, repeat time 73.
I tend to just edit announcement posts when there's useful information that I think should definitely be in the text of the post. Nobody has complained about these kinds of moderator shenanigans yet, at least that I've noticed, so I'll probably keep doing them unless the people posting remember to add that kind of information themselves. (Each such edit is intended as a gentle suggestion to "please add more information in the text next time." In an ideal world I'd really rather not have to do it at all.)

However, this time there's a little more to say that doesn't fit so well in an edit, I think.

This might actually set bounding-box and repeat-time records for elementary color-changing glider reflectors.

That's an artificially limited category, though. The bounding box of this new CC reflector is 45x36 (EDIT: minimized bounding box 44x36, see Entity Valkyrie 2's post below).

That's very competitive with a Bandersnatch+Snark combination. But it doesn't quite beat all of the combinations on bounding box or repeat time; the four combinations are 51x32, 45x34, 44x41, and 44x38 -- all repeat time 70 due to the Bandersnatch.

Am I forgetting any other small composite color-changing 90-degree G-to-Gs? The Scorbie Splitter reflector is 58x26 but safe repeat time is way up at 90 ticks.

EDIT: ...I see I've once again mostly duplicated some discussion on Discord that has already happened, related to this.

The repeat time is 154 if you don't worry about the input glider hitting the output glider.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Galumpher engineering has led to a new, spartan, 180 degree reflector. On a new lane.

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 34, rule = B3/S23

!
Remove the leftmost block for a toad factory.
I think that now that there are several spartan 180 degree reflectors based on Galumphoid designs that a wiki page is in order.
