For discussion of specific patterns or specific families of patterns, both newly-discovered and well-known.

A failed synthesis that actually synthesizes something completely different than intended:

R + Beehive + blinker = HWSS + B + TL. I'm sure one could make a HWSS gun out of it with Herschel circuits (I put a subconduit and a snark above the reaction to output a Herschel and delete the TL), but I don't know how to work with Herschels, so this is just a curiosity. Unfortunately, the reaction cannot be combined with a block to make a wick that releases HWSSs.

`x = 41, y = 37, rule = B3/S2331bo\$29b3o\$28bo\$28b2o3\$36b2o\$37bo\$37bob2o\$29b2o4b3o2bo\$29b2o3bo3b2o\$9b2o23b4o\$9b2o9b2o15bo\$19bobo12b3o\$2obo15bo13bo\$ob2o14b2o14b5o\$38bo\$36bo\$36b2o8\$12bo\$11b3o\$11bo3\$7bo\$6bobo\$6bobo\$7bo2\$3b3o!`

EDIT: There's this wick, though. Any simple one-time glider reflectors out there, besides boats? I want to kick those gliders back at the debris to clean up the reaction, but boat reflectors don't work.

`#C 37c/170 wick releases HWSSsx = 210, y = 51, rule = B3/S239\$12bo35bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$12bo35bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$12bo35bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$15b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o\$14bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo\$15b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o\$62bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$61bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo\$20b2o39bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo\$21b2o39bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$21bo6\$44bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$43bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo\$43bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo33bobo\$44bo35bo35bo35bo35bo\$33b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o\$32bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo32bo2bo\$33b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o34b2o2\$29b3o33b3o33b3o33b3o33b3o!`

I found this unusual (perhaps already known) flip-flop stabilizer, but it doesn't seem to be able to be stabiliezd with anything... It is due to the fact that while others flip-flops don't change "polarity", this one does.

People have been rediscovering that one a lot lately. Were you using the Seeds of Destruction Game, by any chance? Paul Chapman ran into that reaction while testing out an early SODGame release last year, and I think I've seen it somewhere else more recently.

Speaking of *WSSes, here's an incredibly weird HWSS edge-shooter from oblique's slow-salvo spaceship seed search software:

`#C reaction 137349383 from sample_e.patx = 28, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory15.C\$16.2C\$15.2C3\$15.C\$14.C.C5.2C\$13.C2.C5.C.C\$14.2C7.C6\$26.2C\$26.2C12\$3C!`

There are lots more where that came from -- though maybe not too many that look quite that improbable!

Nope. Chasing a wild hair looking for that elusive (23,5)c79 helix seed.
More than a few xWSS+object to Herschel have surfaced, but none that can be cleanly resolved to said object and repeated @ p79.
Thought I'd try a more complex seed. I seem to recall a couple of herschel+xWSS combos resolving to eater during my experiments. Killing time on a Sunday morning.

This reduces to a 2-glider-blinker collision that leaves a HWSS and a debris block (or blinker+3 gliders to HWSS). Except for the phasing of the activation glider (that is important) and the phasing of the debris removal glider (that isn't), this is almost identical to a similar HWSS that I have in my collection from Jan. 18, that I think I distilled from another post on this forum (or a similar one). Here are the new and old ones in the one instance I could find where this mechanism improves an existing incremental two-spaceship flotilla synthesis:

The period-12 oscillator core (top left) is well-known. It can be hassled by many things whose periods divide 12 (e.g. caterers and jams). I'm not sure if this unix-supported variant has been used before, but it works the same way as the others.

Although this specific set of pieces may be new, the mangled 3/4-traffic-light turning into a bi-hat (bottom right) has been known for a long time.

Here's an odd result from the Half-Baked Knightship project: this morning was looking for ways to suppress the output from a chain of half-bakery pairs -- i.e., the gliders coming from the northeast (except the first one has been delayed with one extra half-bakery reaction).

The spacing happened to work out to produce an unlikely-looking clean Herschel seed. I couldn't use it, but didn't want it to go to waste:

`x = 25, y = 39, rule = LifeHistory2A\$2A8\$7.3D\$8.D\$6.3D\$21.C\$19.2C\$20.2C2\$3.C.C5.C\$4.2C3.2C\$4.C5.2C18\$22.3C\$22.C\$23.C!`
