A simple way of creating a spark that emits a dot spark far away from the rest of the spark (like the spark in a fountain):

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
5b3o$bob7obo$2b9o$obobo3bobobo$b11o$2bob2ob2obo$ob9obo$b2obo3bob2o$2b

$b11o$2bob2ob2obo$ob9obo$b2obo3bob2o$2b9o$ob4ob4obo$bob7obo$4b2ob2o!
With all live cells:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
5b3o$bob7obo$2b9o$ob9obo$b11o$2b9o$ob9obo$b11o$2b9o$ob9obo$b11o$2b9o$o
b9obo$b11o$2b9o$ob9obo$b11o$2b9o$ob9obo$b11o$2b9o$ob9obo$bob7obo$4b2ob
2o!
Random filling:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
5b3o$bob7obo$2b9o$ob2o4bobobo$b6obob2o$2b9o$ob2ob2ob3obo$b4o2b5o$2bob

2obo$b11o$2bo3b2o2bo$ob4ob4obo$b7ob3o$2b3ob2ob2o$ob4o2b3obo$bob7obo$4b

If we could synthesize this type of spark or its variants away from the lone dot spark, we could possibly create a powerful superfountain.

Adding one cell to an arbitrarily long wick results in a 11995-generation methuselah. If I were to name it, I would give it the name of a 2000-era car (because car prices often end in 995 but it's clearly not a current price), but I don't think it's notable enough for a name.

Another thing: 2 Arks make a puffer that creates a cool still life in the middle of the ash.

Code: Select all

x = 101, y = 101, rule = B3/S23
2bobo$5bo$bo2bo$3o6$13bo$12bobo2$11bo2bo$11b2o$11bo72$88bobo$91bo$87b
o2bo$86b3o6$99bo$98bobo2$97bo2bo$97b2o$97bo!
The core reaction that produces the still life is just two R-pentominos and 4 blocks:

Code: Select all

x = 56, y = 56, rule = B3/S23
18bo$18b2o$17b2o$38b2o$38b2o3$2o$2o8$51b2o$51b2o19$54bo$53b3o$53bo16$
47b2o$47b2o!
Catagolue says that it takes 40 gliders to construct the still life, whereas this reaction requires 14 (3 for each R-pentomino and 2 for each of the blocks) leaving at most 25 gliders to clean up unwanted ash to produce a record-breaking glider synthesis. In fact, there just 16 individual objects to clean up, so even cleaning up each object individually with a single glider still produces a record-breaking synthesis. I am not going to to try to explicitly construct one, but anyone can give a try (it is slightly tedious but straightforward).

There's a later stage that's probably cheaper to construct:

I'm traveling and therefore away from my octohash databases for the moment, but it seems very likely that that active object has a cheap synthesis.

Hi, I discovered how to fire 1 glider at a 2 engine cordership. It turns into a block laying switch engine. Not sure if it’s been catalogued, but interesting nonetheless. This works from several angles, but I put the cleanest one here. Unfortunately, since this is my first post, I don’t know how to use the lifeviewer tag thing, so I took a screenshot.

Welcome to the forums!!

As for the lifeviewer tag thing, yes, that is how we share patterns. Screenshots are nice for showing the structure of a massive pattern (millions/billions of cells), but since your pattern is so small, the RLE is preferred.

In LifeViewer, the way you get that is by selecting what you want copied and pressing Ctrl+C (yes, even on a Mac, not Cmd!). You can then paste this into a forum post box between [ code] [ /code] tags. (The [ viewer] tag creates a really large and annoying inline embedded viewer, which isn't preferred, as opposed to the pop-up created by the "show in viewer" link on [ code] boxes.)

For example, here's a glider:

Code: Select all

[code]
x = 3, y = 3, rule = Life
bo$2bo$3o!
[/ code]
Ad here's what it shows up as:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = Life
bo$2bo$3o!
Also, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you install Golly (see the link at the top of the page), it is so much more powerful than LifeViewer for simulating patterns. It can run a pattern to millions of generations in mere minutes, which would take LifeViewer days.

As for what you found: a Cordership is already made up of switch engines, so this isn't unusual.
