A Hershel, several catalysts, and a sacrificial block make a temporary HWSS:

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 44, rule = LifeHistory
7.2B$6.2B2C$5.3B2C2B$5.9B$5.8B4D6.C$5.7B6D3.3C$5.7B4DB2D.C$4.12B2D2.

$7.11B$7.12B$7.12B$8.11B$6.4B.4B3CB$6.2C4.4BC2B$7.C4.2B3C2B$4.3C6.6B$
4.C8.7B$15.B.4B$18.4B$19.4B$20.4B$21.4B$22.4B$23.4B$24.4B$25.4B$26.4B
$27.4B$28.4B$29.4B$30.4B$31.4B$32.4B$33.3B$34.B!
By replacing the block-and-eater combination with a sacrificial block, glider, etc., the HWSS can escape, but several catalysts are destroyed. It may or may not be possible to make a small stable H-HWSS out of this.

Manual soup search, torus edition!

Generates an LWSS traveling along the finite (and short) y-axis:

Code: Select all

x = 100, y = 8, rule = B3/S23:T0,8

Creates an infinitely long pseudo-still life composed of 24-bit strict still lifes:

If you meant waves as waves of *WSSs, a randomagar search might help you find what you are looking for.

A slow salvo of LWSSs can move a blinker anywhere:

One of the p12 oscillators in the DRH collection uses caterers for hassling, but it turns out that eater 2s will do just as well.

That's a nice trick! It also works to replace the mazings in a variant of gourmet (although it doesn't improve the cell count or bounding box):

Code: Select all

Not sure if its been found before, but in rule = B2, you can create Sierpinski triangles by colliding small spaceships. Forgive me as I'm still pretty new to this.

I was trying to Bellman-ize a Herschel receiver's smoke so that it would delete the prominent beehive, yielding a direct G-to-H. It didn't work (max-active and repair-interval set to 9), but there's a loaf at the edge of the smoke that sits there for a while during the reaction, and Bellman did its thing.

At some point, Gustavo wondered if a mango could be a catalyst. Apparently it can, if you attach a tail.

I hope that Gustavo secretly knew about this catalysis all along...

Anyway, Bill Gosper found this interaction between two arks which eventually (530K gens) stabilises to form a crystallisation-and-decay. Rather than being bounded by an eater, it is bounded by a perpendicular glider stream originating from a 'bounce' reaction:
