Without max-live and/or max-active I think that search will take a very long time to run.

That's why I'm allowing any kind of modification to the input file.

If a fast stable G-to-H or glider duplicator is desired, then it might be possible to use a bait to coax a Herschel from one of the outlying sparks of this clean glider eater:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 37, rule = B3/S23

I think that Guam's search program is most amenable to this task.

About the p41 wick: perhaps we could use otherwise-impractically-long-delay eaters to do the job, like with this:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

Actually, at first I didn't know that this was an incomplete search pattern, and posted it in the Unsure discoveries thread. Coincidentally, this thread came on top about an hour later. Otherwise I wouldn't have known. What are the chances of that!
N.B. This was my first successful output on the search, so there's a big possibility of optimization.

The task here has now gone from investigation to optimization.

I think a p7 with these sparks(upper left and lower right) could stabilize the p28 wick.

I think the two copies of 58P5H1V1 can be arranged southeast so that the glider stream is cleanly converted into the retracting beehive mechanism, somehow. If so, the pattern becomes a sawtooth of minimum population 254, which would be a new record--although since the gun and ships are out-of-sync, and the retracting mechanism is so slow, the expansion factor would be humongous.

Without a doubt, no hope. There are two moments of interaction between neighbouring units and a hypothetical Bellman still life stabilisation would have to chomp on them so quickly in succession it would certainly implode. I have indeed ran a Bellman search for the catalyst without any success.

It might still be possible, but it would probably be just as effective to find a end stabilization which depends on the wick for support.

I doubt that Bellman can find direct stabilization for this wick in reasonable time, but there would be a chance to find a stabilization using Bellman if there existed a stabilization with an expendable spartan still-life, that produced a workable spark. (I haven't tried it myself.)

P. S. A blinker would also suffice, if it happens to be restored in the right phase.

Although this won't break any records, this p194 seems pretty stabilizable.

Partial for an asymmetric c/5 diagonal ship. I was trying to JLS up a new sparker to complete the sawtooth, but it turns out to be, uh, tricky. And the population is too high. Still worth completing, though.

Alternately, replacing the blocks with hives results in a similar effect to using blocks, except that there is also some leftover reaction that may be able to be manipulated back into hives again:

Here I added two blocks which quickly turn the reaction into gliders; without them it produces two blinkers. Maybe a Bellman search might find a catalyst to restore the hives?
Help?

thanks for the optimizations! I found the agar from (slightly modified) randomagar source and that outputs everything with non-skewed torus symmetry, so it's unoptimized a lot of times...

Possible candidate for yet another p17? Originally suggested by Jason Summers(I think) years before bellman.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 19, rule = B3/S23

Oops. It's already in Jason Sunmer's collection but trying to stabilize it certainly won't hurt!

Nice. If it is stabilized it will almost certainly yield a p34 using known techniques for doubling the period because of large sparks it produces.
