Thanks! The one with the small p120 seems to have the smallest population and the fewest exotic components, so I'm going with that.

A few classic tricks can reduce the bounding box further:

so I suspect minimizing the bounding box is not his goal. Even so, your glider gun reorientation does reduce the bounding box of the "simple" gun a bit:

Correct. I'm working on simplifying my ancient extensible delay loop in the "components and contraptions" thread. It is much smaller than I ever imagined it being at time. I want a small, compact gun, but some of my criteria are more subjective.

With the latest minimization, a p120 recirculating MWSS loop seems small enough to consider in a design even if you're not looking to expand the size. Non-destructive reads become trivial and you get two streams of bit output for free.

ADDED: is there any reason not to do this at p60? I forget why I settled on p120. Sorry, not thinking clearly this morning. I assume p120 is to match the streams coming back from the best puffers I knew of at the time.

ADDED: Hmm... OK, at p60 the MWSSs don't always pass each others, sometimes they mutually annihilate. I wonder if this could be a natural computer for some linear congruential generator. I can't figure out the dynamics just looking. It may be less interesting than that and just filter it down to a p120 stream with gaps.

On a related note, I have been wondering for a while if one can fit that spark in there, I know that one can make a p60 HWSS this way, but not sure about p30... (the one p30 HWSS is quite ugly/bulky). Of course one can undo that funky queen bee welding.

This mwss-constructor is doubtless known.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
$bo4bo$2b2obo$b2o2b3o2$5b2o!
The two cells can be taken of a hwss.

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
$bo4bo$2b2obo$b2o2b3o2$5b2o$3bo4bo$9bo$3bo5bo$4b6o!
With this pattern you can make every mwss-rake with periods >= 20 and multible of 4 easily.

Code: Select all

x = 82, y = 51, rule = B3/S23
2$62b2o$60b2ob2o13b2o$60b4o13b4o$61b2o14b2ob2o$79b2o$58bo$57b3o$56bob

Because the rake is flat on one side, you can combine it to a nearby double rake.

Is it the time to synthesis every n-cell unstable patterns?

I know it is pointless to do that, but isn't all-still-life synthesis also useless(except a few which could be used in conduit construction)?

I also know there has to be some way to prevent those far-away glider colliding simple object.

Well, you've got Gardens of Eden, which by definition are unsynthesisable, and are also unstable…

Oh, excluding Gardens of Eden. And sorry, I accidentally posted this in usure discoveries thread instead of basic question thread.

A spark can extract a glider from Beluchenko's Other p37, in case we ever get a p37 sparker:

Probably not. It's not four ponds, it's two bi-ponds.

I don't see that as a disqualifying factor, since the fleet and bakery are respective pairs of bi-ships and bi-loaves.

A better reason to leave this out is that it's not really familiar; traffic lights, honeyfarms, blockades, fleets, and bakeries come up all the time, all arise multiple times from collisions of 2-3 gliders, and they have been commonly observed for almost half a century. Land of lakes is not nearly as common; besides, it's already mentioned on the Wiki page. The two-glider collision that makes 4 skewed blocks would likely occur much more frequently.

EDIT The two R-pentominos rapidly form two fleet predecessors; colliding pairs of R-pentominos or pair of fleets both result in 6-glider syntheses, which is slightly cheaper than making the bi-ponds individually (as the 3-glider synthesis could only be used for one of them).

EDIT 2: Two other not-quite-so-familiar fours are the small fleet and small honeyfarm, also from six gliders:

Four skewed blocks also already has a link in the Familiar Fours wiki article, as an optional runner-up.

No, the last time that Familiar Fours entry came up, I tracked the "4 eaters" mention back to Dean Hickerson's experiments with Eric Angelini's Life integer patterns:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

The LifeWiki article describes those four eaters as belonging to the "less familiar fours". At this point, it really is several decades too late to change the membership list for the original Familiar Fours. If a four-of-the-same-object constellation wasn't well known by 1980 or so, it just plain isn't familiar enough to be one of the Familiar Fours.

Welcome to the forums (even though your account is over a year old)!

That pattern has probably been discovered before, but small patterns that last that long are generally considered to be uninteresting.

Also, please use [c‏‏ode][/code] tags instead of [vie‏wer][/viewer] tags; they take up less space.
Any sufficiently advanced software is indistinguishable from malice.

For some reason I haven't been able to track down a single-step tub to hook component anywhere — so here's a 3G one:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

It's possible I just didn't look hard enough.

Good! I didn't have any in my own archives (other than 2 gliders tub-to-head + 3 gliders head-to-hook)

This Rich's p16 on tumbler probably isn't the smallest p112, otherwise it would be noted.

I think it actually is the smallest known; I don't see any other way of making a smaller one. (Achim's p16 doesn't work in this case AFAIK) The oscillator page on the wiki was for the most part written in 2009, so it's possible that just no one has gotten around to listing some of the newer LCD oscillators since then.

Nice! Here is a 24-glider synthesis of 50p112. Nothing new here; traditional 14-glider Rich's P16 plus 10-glider edge-shot tumbler. Making the tumbler first might be cheaper, but doesn't work, unless someone finds a way to edge-shoot Rich's P16 at a reasonable cost.
