Minor discoveries

Postby Sokwe » May 30th, 2011, 4:57 am

This is for patterns that don't really go in any other topic, but also don't seem to warrant a topic of their own.

To start things off, here's a p5 domino sparker that provides quite a bit of clearance on one side:
x = 30, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
2b2o$6o$2ob5o$o3bo3bo12bo3b2o$9bo9b3o2bobo$bob2o2b4obob2o2bo3b3o$b4o6b

4o$b2o7bobo2b2o2bo2bo3bo$10b2o2b2ob2o6b2o!

It's no shorter than David Eppsteins domino sparker, but it may be useful in a few situations. It can at least reduce the true-period p50 gun to only one engine (has this been done before?):
x = 112, y = 46, rule = B3/S23

David Bell made one, though a bit differently. From Jason Summers' "all-osc" collection:

What I think is the smallest billiard table configuration possible (in terms of bounding box) (though not proven).
x = 10, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

    When will a 2x2 gun be discovered...?
    Guess what Chuck Norris did when he heard about Conway's game of life? He built a replicator.
    Does LongLife have spaceships?

5×10=50. Fore and back has that beat at 7×7=49.

If nonrectangular bounding boxes are allowed, that one can be argued to be 42 while F&B is 43, but this thing proceeds to beat them both with a mere 32:
x = 8, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

(In terms of rotor/bushing, the 2-bit on-offs are well kno'n to be minimal, tho.)

Here's a small tagalong for a dragon that can be supported in two different ways:

The "5blink" oscillator can be used to support a harbor quadrant:
