To upload a viewer on reply, one presses the viewer button at the top of the post toolbar, and pastes in the RLE or macrocell encoding or whatever. I recommend that instead of using the viewer button, you use the code button as it uses less space. The code button is also in the toolbar.

Now that the viewer is fairly well tested, I've mostly gone back to [ code ] tags also. Too many viewers on one page of a thread will make it slow to load, particularly for people with older computers or slow browsers.

However, if a post is talking about details of a pattern, sometimes it's nice to have a small thumbnail illustration right there near the text. For even moderately large patterns, the viewer's [[ THUMBNAIL ]] option takes up a lot less vertical space than a code tag.

Below is a comparison of three ways of looking at the same piece of LifeHistory RLE. The three patterns are exactly the same if you copy them into Golly. The only differences are in the double-bracketed script commands at the end of the RLE text. These are interpreted as commands to the viewer. Hit "H" after clicking on a viewer window and scroll down, to see all the different viewer script commands that you can embed in #C comment tags at the beginning or end of RLE. EDIT: Since September 2015, the LifeViewer supports visible extra states in LifeHistory, so the [[ VIEWONLY ]] tag is now more or less useless for LifeHistory patterns.

Click the "Quote" button, without actually posting a response, and this whole message will be included in your reply window, so you can see exactly what the actual BBCode tags look like.

Select something in Golly, and choose Edit > Copy, or Ctrl+C. That will put the pattern in your clipboard in RLE format.

If you want to cut down on the big black area, try adding something like

#C [[ THUMBNAIL ZOOM 10 HEIGHT 240 ]]

to the beginning or end of that RLE chunk.

That's a lot of screen space to use for a couple of pre-pulsars. People have known about the second one for 45 years now: one of the very early projects was figuring out what happened to all of the possible heptominoes.

A few billion different pre-pulsars about the size of the first pattern could be generated automatically with JLS or WLS.
