What is etymology of “Golly”?

Most sources say it first appeared in the late 18th century as a euphemism for God. These days it's mostly used as an expression of surprise, such as on first seeing HashLife in action. :) (And just in case it isn't obvious, Golly is a play on the Game of Life, often abbreviated as GoL.)

EDIT: And while I'm at it, the reasons for choosing Kok's Galaxy as Golly's icon:
- Galaxy and Golly share a lot of letters.
- The pattern looks a bit like a G.
- It also looks a bit like the main window (tool bars top and left, scroll bars right and bottom).
