Why didn't Life-like cellular automata get invented much earlier? The rules are incredibly simple, and it doesn't need computers to play.

I mean, sometime in history somebody probably came up with the idea, but nobody thought to publish it until JHC? There have been plenty of math discoveries that seem incredibly simple in hindsight (like the X-Y coordinate plane)
