I believe it was proven one can't make a gun with such a reaction alone but then and again somebody can do a complicated Snark setup

Either the NW or NE one. I think the NE one since we can do a double snark with some Herschel conduit glider adjustment voodoo magic

The input and output gliders in first reaction can be separated using only reflectors. I don't know if the outputs can be connected back to the inputs using only reflectors but it would be fun to try.

These should be fairly easy to improve on with modern technology. The big improvement will be cutting things down to just one copy of the reaction -- unless that's already been done, too, and I've just forgotten. (?).

One way to approach the problem might be to try connecting outputs to inputs using a chain of Snarks. When the color turns out to be wrong and the connection can't be made, substitute a suitable reflector for the Snark.

"Suitable" is an interesting question. The p8 reflectors and p8 bumpers in chris_c's sample pattern are good for allowing other streams of gliders to pass nearby, but they'll restrict your gun to have a period that's a multiple of eight, which is the worst possible thing for adjustability.

If you pick an odd period, then if it turns out to be awkward to get a particular glider in a reflected stream to the right spacetime location -- i.e., turns out to need a really long loop, as happens sometimes in the above guns by Jason Summers -- then the previous glider or the next glider will probably be easier to adjust, using 1-cell diagonal moves of reflector pairs to change the timing by +/-8N.

If a signal branch still seems to require a huge loop, it will often help to substitute a period-N bumper reflector for a Snark, to change the output glider's timing by three ticks. One way or another you should be able to close the cycle and end up with a gun.

I suppose another way of looking at this challenge would be to require that the actual gliders in a specific 4G->5G reaction have to be reflected until they crash together again in the next 4G->5G reaction. The gun's period would have to be much lower to allow this. You wouldn't be able to "cheat" by using the next or previous glider in a stream, so you'd probably have to use a lot more reflectors.

Still, it shouldn't take more than seven bumpers to get to the right mod-8 timing, so that a simple trombone slide adjustment (Life Lexicon link) will let you make a connection. If any other terms I'm using are unfamiliar, they should be in the new Lexicon, too -- let me know if they aren't!

Well, if we're using trombone slides made from snarks, for which increasing the distance will only increase delay the gliders by multiples of eight, I don't think it will hurt too much to use the period eight reflectors and bumpers.

Another thing we could do is make a four barreled gun and use a glider to Herschel converter, have a Herschel track output four gliders, and use snarks to get those gliders to the correct spot.

It's the "worst possible thing" because with p8 reflectors or bumpers, your gun period will necessarily be a multiple of eight.

With a p8N period, you won't be able to use that trombone-slide adjustability to deliver a previous or later glider to your target spacetime location, and have that make a difference to the timing. If the timing happens to be right, this is great -- you can trivially adjust loop sizes down to a minimum with no ill effects.

But the timing only happens to be right 1/8th of the time, even once you get the color right. Often the shortest signal loop will use a different glider from the one you expect.

If you require that each of four output signals becomes an input signal for the very next 4G->5G reaction, then it doesn't matter -- you'll have to do all the adjusting with tricks like adding a chain of up to seven Snarks and substituting bumpers (of whatever period) until the mod-8 timing works out.

But if that's not a requirement, then if you pick a 8N+0 gun period, on average it will be about twice as difficult to make connections as if you pick an 8N+4 gun period. And 8N+4 is twice as difficult as an 8N+2 or 8N+6 gun period, which is twice as difficult as any odd period.

(Okay, it's not really twice as difficult at each stage -- maybe 1.5 or something. But you get the idea.)

I think you misunderstood. I'm trying to make a four-barreled gun using the reaction in the OP. I want to take one of the outputs from the reaction and hook it up to the input of the Herschel conduit.

If that's the goal, here's a universal glider adjustment toolkit that will make the job fairly straightforward.

Your first job is to connect each output of your four-glider fanout device to four of the structures in the toolkit -- either the "s0" one or the "d0" one, depending on what color you need that output glider to be. Then you just use Snarks to bounce the four output glider around until each one is coming in on one of the 4G->5G's input lanes.

Then you figure out how much too early or too late each glider is coming in -- probably you pick the slowest glider and say that it's arriving on time, and the others are too fast by 8N+{k}. So then you replace your "s0" or "d0" toolkit object with the equivalent "s{k}" or "d{k}" equivalent, as appropriate.

That fixes the {k} part. So then you adjust the trombone slide by N ticks to fix the 8N part for each signal path, and you'll be all done.

There's one other problem that you'll have to decide what to do about. That fanout device can't be hooked up to one of the SE gliders, unless the other SE glider is blocked or diverted somehow. If it's okay that one glider doesn't escape, then you're fine -- you can always unblock your Herschel conduit at the east end and get as many more gliders out as you want, after all. (?).

There are ways to rescue that second SE output, using periodic reflectors as chris_c showed, or in more complicated ways using stable stuff to let the original glider escape unharmed. Which would you like to try?

Because you'll find if you try a minimum-length adjustment of the 180-degree "trombone slides", that moving just one cell diagonally changes the timing of the glider by 8 ticks, not just 4 ticks -- you lose four ticks in each direction. So you need eight different options to account for all the possible 8N+k timings.

That toolkit I linked to is not actually quite the latest technology, by the way. The newest toolkits are probably a little more space-efficient, though they haven't been tested much yet so the jury is still out -- and they're maybe a bit harder for a beginner to understand or use, with all the semi-Snark trickery going on.

I was thinking that if make a new one glider to four glider Herschel track, with the outputs the same color as the inputs to the reaction, and just use color preserving reflectors.

That's something you can figure out yourself, using 'Colour of a glider' in the Life Lexicon.

There's one more problem: if you don't use at least one periodic reflector, you're going to need an edge shooter, or at least a syringe plus Herschel-to-glider with some transparent lanes, for one of the two closely-spaced gliders coming in from the SW in the following pattern.
