is this c/10 spaceship known?

stupid question: how do I go about looking for new spaceship speeds? More specifically, how do I run wls and gfind? I'm not the best in the world with computers

@codeholic: Sure, see the high-period c/5 ships based on spider/glider collisions..

@Kayzan and A for awesome: Taht was quick!

To think what is still hidden in the low period universe after so many years of searches.

Unbelievable!

This spaceship can eat gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
14b2o$13b4o2$12b6o$13b4o2$12b2o2b2o$10b2obo2bob2o$13bo2bo3$14b2o$14b2o

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 28, rule = B3/S23
14b2o$13b4o2$12b6o$13b4o2$12b2o2b2o$10b2obo2bob2o$13bo2bo3$14b2o$14b2o

12bo4bo3$14b2o$14b2o10$3o$2bo$bo!
A glider can cleanly destroy it:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 22, rule = B3/S23
13bo2bo$13bo2bo$12bo4bo$12bo4bo$12bo4bo$12bo4bo$11b3o2b3o$11bob4obo$
12bo4bo3$14b2o$14b2o7$3o$2bo$bo!

Code: Select all

11b2o$2bo11b2o$bo!
As Ivan pointed out, it can turn glider into a pond:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 26, rule = B3/S23
14b2o$12b2o2b2o$14b2o$11bo6bo$12bo4bo$14b2o$11b3o2b3o$11b2o4b2o3$14b2o

By the way, which of the four phases with 28 cells should be canonical? I guess, the first one?

I'd say the first one. The fourth one kind of looks like a gangster wearing a tiara.

Should we set up a poll for the name of the ship?

This is amazing! It doesn't even look remotely like a Life pattern to me, more like something from B36/S245... Just, wow...

zdr has the right to name the ship if they wish, following standard convention for new important patterns. We should probably wait a bit to give them a chance to do so before going on to public naming.

I think the discoverer has the right to officially name it.
For the same reason, Sawmill is still officially unnamed (I was afraid of letting it get stuck with an extremely boring name).
I do like "cuttlefish" for this new ship.

I just had a thought.... I think this is the first time a c/n velocity has been found before the velocity c/(n-1)...!(ignoring c/2, because lightspeed spaceships are impossible anyway)

Orthogonal of course. This happened with the corderships.

I'd actually say the third one, as that one has the smallest bounding box of those four (by area). (A 30-cell phase has the smallest bounding box of all phases.)

Congrats on finding this. Who knows what other small ships may lurk on the edges of what we've searched. Perhaps we can keep better track of unsuccessful searches?

I agree with EE, it should be the third - both because of its bounding box and because, in my opinion, the first kinda looks like it's going to move backwards (thanks to the sloped shape at the bottom).

I think zdr should choose, though, whenever s/he happens to come back online.

This is insane, by the way! I definitely agree that it looks like something out of Morley or another Life-like rule. Congrats, zdr, and hopefully we'll be able to use your method to find more ships like this one (does "there may be bugs in gfind" mean you developed your own search program/tweaked gfind or something?)

You were the one who discovered the equally tiny loafer. You'll definitely find something else if you put your mind to it.

Congratulations, zdr, this is an utterly astounding discovery, well beyond "awesome" and straight into "HOLY SH*T" territory! Not just a new spaceship speed, but a remarkably small, almost elementary ship. It'll take a very strong contender to dethrone this as 2016's pattern of the year in my book.
muzik wrote:Can someone update the main page with this ship?
On the Life Wiki? Can't edit the Main Page proper, but I added a DYK item. It's both the least and the most I could do. ;)

Name-wise - I'm pretty partial to "copperhead" myself, but the choice is of course zdr's.

As of the canon, the third looks quite like a snake head or something, so I wouldn't be against a name like so, but the first one can be seen as a man so happy he's slightly crying...

However, if one considers there are too many "animal" ships, how about "carrier"? It seems to pull a block similarly to the weekender pushing a loaf.

Huh! Congrats!! This is incredible!

Edit: How long did it take to find the ship?
Edit: And zdr should name the ship (after others' suggestions)

The loafer pushes a loaf.

Since we can't have blocker, I suggest something like blockdragger or blockpuller. Or blockalong?

Also, here's a small useless reaction: a block eats the ship, but not entirely, leaving 2 blocks, including the carried one. It means a stream of ships "crystallize" very easily.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
