I agree with EE, it should be the third - both because of its bounding box and because, in my opinion, the first kinda looks like it's going to move backwards (thanks to the sloped shape at the bottom).

I think zdr should choose, though, whenever s/he happens to come back online.

This is insane, by the way! I definitely agree that it looks like something out of Morley or another Life-like rule. Congrats, zdr, and hopefully we'll be able to use your method to find more ships like this one (does "there may be bugs in gfind" mean you developed your own search program/tweaked gfind or something?)
I would also say the third, given not only the bounding box, but also the fact that that 28-cell phase is the most contiguous.

So the total cost for the current recipe is... what, 24 or 25 gliders, then? Just turn on the two red blocks next to the fumarole's feet, sometime after T=12 in the pattern below, and it's ready for liftoff.

Does anybody know offhand how to drop those two blocks simultaneously? Seems like that should be a three- or four-glider task. If someone has the recipe already then I don't need to run gencols.

It's looking good already. I wouldn't be surprised if the cost eventually goes down to a dozen gliders or less -- but if it's up to me, it will probably stay right here around 25.

EDIT: I knew I should have waited just a little longer before posting -- thanks, gmc_nxtman and chris_c! That eater-to-block trick is one of many dozens that I've never managed to memorize, but a custom gencols solution can shave off a few gliders as usual. So it's 23 gliders for the moment. Might it be possible to move the bottom block in chris_c's version of the recipe with two gliders, instead of deleting and rebuilding it with three?

EDIT2: Thanks again, chris_c -- you're staying well ahead of me. I'll stop trying to keep up now.

I suspect we can reasonably get down to 21 = 7 (fumarole) + 4 (pair of two-glider collisions at the fumarole feet) + 6 (pair of domino sparkers) + 2 (lower input gliders to be sparked) + 2 (lower block). 20, with clever gencols use.

As spaceships get slower and their periods increase, they become harder to search for. Someone would have found it, but if you'd asked anyone before today to find a c/10 orthogonal ship with a search program, we'd say something like "Okay, but I won't be alive to name it by then."

Could a gliderless for this ship exist? It's small enough that it could theoretically be assembled with B-heptominos if we really needed to

There might be a way to build a gliderless gun for the copperhead, but it could end up being pretty expensive compared to a standard glider synthesis. It's a little tricky to get a lot of B-heptominoes into place without building them out of gliders. So I'd probably want to tackle the problem by building some alternate seed for the copperhead, by colliding *WSSes.

It could even be done with *WSS slow salvos, presumably, starting from a block generated by a *WSS collision. But it would be convenient if the *WSS collisions were allowed to generate temporary gliders here and there. Why the interest in gliderless technology in this case?

*WSS constructions are an almost completely unexplored field, to my knowledge. Here there might be some potential to build a gun with a significantly faster repeat time, by doing more of the construction with *WSSes coming in from the left and right.

Random tangential thought: I never really expected to see a glider-constructible spaceship that a loafer could catch -- for the standard old task of making a faraway target for a replicator, let's say:

Yes, temporary gliders are allowed, as long as they aren't being fired from permanent guns. I'm mainly thinking of something gliderless because the ship is pretty narrow like the weighted spaceships and could possibly be assembled in a tight space.

Also, the copperhead seems to be pretty strong at the back of it, the interactions seen earlier in the thread involve mostly the back. If it has a head on collision with anything it probably won't live to see another cycle.


I never really expected to see a glider-constructible spaceship that a copperhead could catch -- Someone in the future (maybe 2019, with a tiny c/13 orthogonal ship? Who knows)

Sort of, anyway. I built a few different periods of guns for the original Gemini back in 2010, but recently the gun-building has mostly been chris_c's work. The 0hd Demonoid spaceship has the strange distinction that it didn't exist until chris_c's gun pattern fired the first one.

However, there are currently no self-constructing orthogonal spaceships. The Caterpillar and Centipede are technically both certainly glider-constructible, if someone wants to put together a sufficiently clever program to compile a recipe automatically. (I don't quite see anyone tackling that task by hand.) The Caterpillar is too fast for even a c/3 spaceship to catch, let alone a loafer. A Centipede would lose to a loafer, though it would beat a copperhead.

Neither a Demonoid nor the original Gemini can be adjusted easily to make an orthogonal spaceship, so I don't think we actually had anything on hand that a loafer could catch, until this morning. The Gemini can be recompiled fairly easily to get different angles, but an orthogonal direction would take a complete redesign -- the two construction arms couldn't reach parts of two of the reflector banks, so those parts would have to be built with slow salvos... might as well rebuild the whole thing a couple of orders of magnitude smaller, with two of simeks' single-channel construction arms.

-- That's leaving aside the question of how loafers could stop a Geminoid or a Centipede when they caught it. Cleanup would be quite a big problem (to say the least).

It's certainly possible to do a complete redesign and come up wtih an orthogonal Geminoid that could be caught and stopped cleanly by a loafer. But of course the Geminoid would move too slowly to serve any practical purpose -- in terms of providing a faraway construction target, anyway.

Short summary: copperheads are much nicer!

You need to use the "l" parameter to set the width of the search. For example,
