Trying to make weekender eater, is there anything I'm missing?
As an exercise, that's a fine thing to work on, and I have no advice other than to keep at it.

But here is something you might be missing: each of the forums on Conwaylife.com/forums has a search function (look for the box that says "search this forum"). If you type "weekender eater" (no quotes necessary) into the search box, you'll get to see various posts with weekender eaters which have already been discovered.

For example, see this weekender eater, by "knightlife", here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=315&p=1851&hilit=we ... ater#p1851
You'll also see that there is a relevant thread called "Spaceship eaters".

These forums are an incredible resource and it is really worthwhile to look through old postings before making a new posting!

Did that, I' just wanting to see if I can find more compact one.

There are two toads, actually, neither of which are particularly notable.

Kind of an interesting reaction, but I highly doubt it's useful unless we can find some sort of diagonal block puffer which can output blocks like this (a modified switch engine?)

Code: Select all

x = 54, y = 46, rule = B3/S23
48bob2o$48b3o$49bo2$36b2o$36b2o3$52b2o$52b2o7$24b2o$24b2o3$40b2o$40b2o
7$12b2o$12b2o3$28b2o$28b2o7$2o$2o3$16b2o$16b2o!
I am not the best at measuring speeds, but the bhep appears to be moving at 3c/19 diagonal. New growing spaceship confirmed?

Also, thing that converts a boat with tail into eater one, and vice versa but not repeatedly: that

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 20, rule = B3/S23
7bo$7b3o$10bo$9bobo$9b2o10bo17bo$20bo17bo$20bo3bo13bo3bo$20b4o14b4o$9b

I am in for chaotic, self-influental, self-similar, metastable systems and playing araound with Dean Hickersons "jagged2". By double the vertical rakes on both sides and eliminating almost all of the LWSS in the stream, the hole system gets really metastable. I named it "wallstreet". Play it and you know why.

A very good LWSS inserter from the front:

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
25bobo$25b2o4bo7bobo$b4o21bo4bobo5b2o$o3bo26b2o7bo$4bo20b2o$o2bo21b2o!
The rightmost glider is to delete a stray block that would destroy the LWSS.

Halved the p515 gun, or at least the one in the collection:

Code: Select all

x = 73, y = 66, rule = B3/S23

As far as I know, these kinds of guns where the output of a syringe is redirected to its input with fewer than 2 Snarks have not been systematically researched. There could well be other record breaking guns out there.

Nope; I don't think anyone has experimented with HLx86H in guns yet. Nice finds.

I don't think so but they are not smaller than this p163 gun:

Guns belonging to this family should set records at quite few periods 163, 165, 167 etc. and also 334, 338, ... but I never got around to properly confirming them.

A "block pulling" reaction using an r-pentomino and eater

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
7b2o$7bo$5bobo$5b2o$bo$b3o$2bo11$2o$2o!
and the B-heptomino doing essentially the same reaction with two blocks:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 12, rule = B3/S23
16bob2o$2o14b3o$2o15bo8$16b2o$16b2o!

I feel like this reaction could somehow be developed into a spaceship:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
5bobo$2o3bobo3b2o$2o3b3o3b2o6$5b3o!
and this one:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
$bo3bo2$2b3o$2b3o4$2b3o!

It is block-laying switch engine. And please read the forum rules carefully.

Unfortunately that's not true, or the gun would be around 5280*5280 in dimensions and have an area of 27878400 square feet. That's far, far bigger than many of the recent guns for things like the crab, dart, and weekender.

Not the smallest known according to the list here. The line for 550 in the "Gun List" section reads

Code: Select all

550 (5928, 'p00358_24')
which means that you can (hopefully) get a p550 gun of area 5928 by taking the gun here and extending it by 24 cells diagonally.

Also not small enough according to the above list.
gmc_nxtman wrote:Or this p501... p539... p511
Thanks. These are smaller and I have added them. By the way the p501 can be used to make a small p167.

Also not smaller.

Replace 'foot' with 'chain' and the statement holds:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain_%28unit%29

See also:

http://www.math.ucr.edu/home/baez/inches.html

The strange emergence of the number 11 has the useful corollary that the order of the Mathieu group M12 (resp. M11) is exactly equal to the number of inches (resp. feet) in 1.5 miles. (Googling 'number of inches in 1.5 miles baez' did return this fact at the top of the search results, followed by a rather bizarre Daily Mail article in second place!)
