Wow, that reflector seems like it could improve a lot of things (mainly guns, but other things)

EDIT:

A few periods of reflectors (note the very small p9 and p22 reflectors, which we didn't have before):

Unfortunately, the p22 reflector does not work at p22 :(

Code: Select all

This (pentadecathlon advanced by a tick by blinkers) seems like one of those things that could be rediscovered a lot. Is it known?

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 3, rule = B3/S23

Removing one of the blinkers makes a transparent reaction:

Good Golly, that's an impressive one. Looks like it can't handle a period-3 spark (EDITed from period-4, except a workable p3 oscillator has been found now (2018)), but anything above that would be good -- and the rest of it is really ridiculously small and simple.

It's a color-preserving reflector, like the Snark and unlike Noam Elkies p5/6/7/8 reflectors. And it even recovers a little faster than a Snark

-- Yes, gun-collection optimization will be one of the big uses. But this "loaflector" reaction can also drop a glider only 4hd away from an passing glider lane.

That's better than any small stable 90-degree reflector can do. I seem to recall the minimum clearance for a semi-Snark is 10hd, and for a regular Snark it's something like 18hd. It even beats the old p8 reflector by a fair margin -- though they're somewhat complementary. The p8 reflector can reflect a glider away from a close parallel lane (5hd away) but can't place a glider closer than 6hd:

Code: Select all

x = 82, y = 73, rule = LifeHistory
79.A$78.A.A$77.A3.A$76.A3.A$75.A3.A$74.A3.A$75.A.A$76.A$72.A$71.A.A$

A!
I'll edit in something about its usefulness in rephasing a glider stream, when I figure it out. I think that may be the biggest advantage of this mechanism, since it's something that a Snark can't do...!

EDIT: Five ticks faster than a Snark reflection:

That's just about as good as it gets, in terms of being able to rephase glider streams. Start with a chain of Snarks, and replace Snarks one by one with these new reflectors until the timing comes out right. (Pairs of Snarks can also be replaced with pairs of domino-spark reflectors to get to a few awkward mod-8 phases more quickly, but that's an optional extra.)

Now all we need is a nice stable version...!

Bother, even after the edit I'm still wrong.

A really small p4 (e.g., mold) won't get out of the way far enough, but a fountain can be made to work -- you don't even need a superfountain. Repeat time is 36, since 32 doesn't quite work:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

Might there be any cheaper, more glider-constructible p4s that could fit in that location?

Here's the previous color-preserving p4N reflector, just for comparison:

The blocker version of this NewColorPreservingLoaflector [@Kazyan, I think this one is going to need a name...] makes a really nice addition to the p8N signal circuitry toolkit. It's about the same size as the figure-eight color-changing reflector, so now it's trivial to put a p8N stream on any lane we want, with any phase mod 8 available just by replacing a few reflectors.

Blockers and figure-eights are probably about equally easy to come up with a slow-salvo seed for, I would guess (haven't really looked yet) so in an emergency these reflectors could even be used in self-constructing circuitry. Golly's HashLife algo would really like the pure power of two... though we'd need some horrible inefficient non-Geminoid way of storing construction data.

I'm sure by this time other folks have had a look at whether Bellman could replace that spark, but it sure doesn't look promising to me. There can't be anything in the spark's location on the previous tick, or you'll get a whole different reaction.

All of the good bread-related terms are taken (or would be ambiguous), so let's call this a "bumper". :)

I like it! Easy to talk about a "p4/5/6/7/8/9/etc. bumper".

There's still a terminology problem, which is not anybody's fault except maybe mine.

I was all set to include separate entries for "p4 reflector" through "p8 reflector" in the Life Lexicon, because all those wonderful mostly-by-Noam-Elkies inventions are small and useful and definitely worth being able to look up in Golly in a few clicks.

I still want those patterns to be included -- but now "p4/5/6/7/8 reflector" is ambiguous! Am I going to have to rename them to "p4 color-changing reflector" and so forth? How awkward.

Maybe that will do for now, and I'll also put in "p4 color-preserving reflector" and so on, linked to "p4 bumper". Then if a distinct name ever emerges and gets commonly used for the color-changing reflectors, maybe it will find its way into the next update.

I'd suggest "pN preserver" and "pN changer" as nicknames for period-N bumper and non-bumper reflectors, in cases where it's important to pay attention to the glider's output color.

A strange reaction in which an H-to-G releases its glider, that glider collides with another glider, and a b-heptomino is produced in the exact same location. Unfortunately the reaction can't be repeated as the B-heptomino's block cancels the repeating glider.

Why not use a reflector to destroy the block with the escaping glider?

I would recommend possibly adding a sparker to eliminate the block but that would make connecting the conduit harder and make it non-Spartan (assuming that bookends aren't ridiculously hard to make).
LifeWiki: Like Wikipedia but with more spaceships. [citation needed]

Bipond+snake eats MWSS, no static ash, only a glider (eaten by eater 5 in the example):

Not just any spaceship, though... If you somehow managed to do that, you would have a knightship!

Anyway, accidental (and probably useless and already known) discovery of 2 pair-of-gliders-with-a-beacon reactions:

First, a reaction that destroys the gliders and beacon but forms a new beacon where the original one was:

Code: Select all

8bo$3b2o2bo$4bo2b3o$bo$b2o3$b2o$obo$2bo!
Second, a reaction with the beacon in its other phase, producing two ponds:

Code: Select all

8bo$3b2o2bo$3b2o2b3o$b2o$b2o3$b2o$obo$2bo!
Using the first reaction, I was able to put four Gosper Glider Guns really close together without them destroying each other:

Code: Select all

That pattern works just as well if you delete the beacons, though.
