Wow! Two errors in one attribution (wrong person, and dyslexic date!). Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Nice. I have several 3-glider syntheses of the block+beehive, but all would have interfered with the junk as originally formed. (One thing my archives are sorely lacking is a library of syntheses of simple pieces of irregular unstable junk. Perhaps that's a project someone might want to undertake?)

New 42-cell SL:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

bobobboboobbbbbb$
ooooobbbooobbooo$
obbboooboooooobb$
bbbobbobbobbobbo!
I'm calling it the "inflected omnibus", analogous to the inflected 30-great-sym. It forms very early (gen 13), but there still may be a synthesis in there.

New p5, fumarole with one tub:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
oobobobboobboboo$
ooobobooobbbbboo$
bbbbobobooobobob$

bobobobobobobooo$
bobobbobbbbooboo$
boooboobobobboob$
obbobbboobobobbb$
ooooobobbbbbbboo$
obobbbbbbbbbbbbo!
The core reaction is tub + (R + block, or P + boat) + pre-TL + 9-cell piece of junk, so I bet there's a synthesis, although it may not improve anything.

The thing is, even if it doesn't, the tub acts as a rock, meaning that this isn't just a synthesis, it's a component.
And a more immediate predecessor can be modified, producing a related one that's far more promising:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

This 4-barreled glider gun showed up in D4_x4 earlier:

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 42, rule = Life
20b2o$20b2o2$36bo$35bobo$35bo2bo$18b2o16b2o$19bo$19bo$18bo9$6bo2bo$6b

o$5bo2$20b2o$20b2o!
Interestingly the loaves eat glider pairs travelling orthogonally to the streams fired; one pair of gliders hitting the loaf adds a pair of ships (EDIT: d'oh, of course they're actually boats; thanks dvgrn!), the next pair of gliders (156 generations later) destroys these again. As a result the gun is period 312 overall even though it fires two pairs of gliders every 156 generations.

Removing the loaves results in an 8-barrelled period-156 gun:

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 42, rule = Life

Huh, weird. I don't think that loaves (or ponds) acting as rocks for pairs of gliders, has come up before in this context. (Minor typo, by the way -- those are boats not ships.)

We had a p312 version of this gun before, and of course we could create lots of other p312 shotguns by adding various standard boat-bit catchers. But I never thought of a loaf or a pond as a workable double-boat-bit catcher.

I have both of these (and also a beehive-flipper) in the period-312 oscillator section of my oscillator synthesis page, and I think I first saw them in some oscillator collection (probably jslife or Dean Hickerson's).

OK, good to know. I'd actually searched for them both on your site, using the above RLE snippets, but found nothing -- I'm not smart enough for that search tool. ;)

The search page is good when you know a pattern's exact parameters. The version currently up shows every phase of every oscillator, except for the extremely large period ones (I think 300 and 312). The next version includes them all. It doesn't show every phase for growing patterns (basically, only one cycle), and only a few common early generations of the methuselahs. You can also search using other criteria (e.g. advanced search, category = oscillator, period = 312). I currently have very few guns listed. You can also skip the search, and go to the main life page, and browse around that way. I find that's often easier for finding patterns in context.

Does anyone have a synthesis for this component? I have run into it several times with natural syntheses but have not been able to synthesise it.

It does not achieve symmetry until it is completely formed, interestingly enough. The R + HF + 2 blocks + blinker + hive stage looks synthesizable.

I made this from 13 gliders, at the same time AbhpzTa was working on his better one:

Code: Select all

x = 168, y = 44, rule = B3/S23

I find your synthesis reductions quite amazing! I'm very curious what methods you use.

Gen 18 suggests a synthesis of 38p7.2:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

I found improvements all the period 2 oscillators listed on mniemiec’s webpage that have syntheses greater or equal to one glider per bit, have less than 15 bits, and appear on catalogue with asymmetry.

Code: Select all

Reduced the first by one:

Code: Select all

x = 61, y = 57, rule = B3/S23

$3bo47b2o$3bo47bobo$43b2o$42b2o$44bo22$58b2o$58bobo$58bo!
Turned the fifth into a component (!):

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
obo$b2o$bo$7bo$7bobo$7b2o5$8b2o$8bo$obo6bo$b2o7bo$bo7b2o2$2b3o$4bo$3bo!
This now allows for that oscillator to be tied to many things.

Does any one have a synthesis for this?

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

(I couldn't find it myself because I have had trouble compiling gencols)
