[Just by the way, this nonstandard way that the three elbow blocks are created makes it a little tricky to build guns for the original Gemini spaceship. In point of fact, a true Gemini gun has never been built: all the known "Gemini guns" really build Geminoid spaceships with exactly the same circuitry but slightly longer recipe glider streams.]

Thanks for the really elegant idea, Chris. Destructor-arm suppression in a mere 14 gliders made the problem into an insurmountable opportunity.

EDIT: Notice that the synthesis can easily be simulated at a step size of 2^20 or above for a good fraction of the construction, but then Golly slows to a relative crawl after 64 million ticks thanks to the opposing glider streams, and seems to be most efficient at step sizes between 2^12 and 2^15 from then on.

You know that Escher print where a dragon sticks its head through little folded gaps in the paper it's drawn on? I keep getting that image stuck in my head, as an illustration of a way that Golly could simulate the Gemini and other similar boustrophedonic-glider devices, at really breakneck speed. There would just have to be a way to define hashtile adjacency in a very nonstandard way just in a few key locations near each replicator unit, such that all of the gliders heading southeast get stored on completely separate hashtiles from all of the gliders heading northwest.

If I had a few years of free time, I'd be tempted to attempt a generalization of Golly's Hashlife algorithm along these lines -- along with proper support for bounded grids and infinite non-empty universes (where the default tile is something other than vacuum). And efficient Hashlife representations of non-2^N spatial periodicity: arrange to leave off rows and/or columns of certain sized hashtiles, to get say 63x63 periodicity instead of 64x64.

Luckily I think I'm safe: too much else to think about in Real Life these days...!

The LifeWiki now has over fifty did-you-know entries, up from the original twenty, including pretty much every item from the first post in this thread. Corrections and update suggestions are welcome as usual.

There's no particular hurry, but my original goal was more like 100 did-you-know items.

I can probably come up with another dozen or two, along the lines of "did you know that a pattern that does such-and-such was constructed by so-and-so in 19xx/20xx?" There are quite a lot of impressive constructions from the past couple of decades that are still relatively little-known, and usually not mentioned on the LifeWiki yet.

What other possible did-you-know categories am I not thinking of? E.g., what have you found out about Conway's Life recently, where you thought, "Huh -- I didn't know that!" ...?

Thanks, I'll fix that -- I see where I misread some partial results in Small Spaceship Syntheses thread, and got the wrong P5 on my list.

Before I go and make the change on the LifeWiki -- did I miss any other new-in-2015 spaceship syntheses? Seems as if there were a few more... Of course there may be more by the end of 2015, but we can cross that bridge later if we come to it.

Thanks! Fixed now, I think. Those first three spaceships were in the Did-You-Know entry for the wrong year, for some reason. Were there "only" three new spaceship syntheses in 2014, then, or have I forgotten a few there too?

The 77-glider-I-believe synthesis of Pushalong 1 is up on the LifeWiki now.

I don't see a complete incremental synthesis of 25P3H1V0.2 anywhere -- has someone completed one? The partial syntheses I can find make me guess that the total is 62 gliders, but that may not be quite right:

Especially the top two, I think. I didn't look much at the hundreds of symmetric soups, just because the super-pond settled out of the first ten soups in just a few ticks, usually less than five. There seem to be a lot of immediate predecessors of super-ponds in diagonally symmetric soup corners, but at least to my untrained eye they don't seem to offer any obvious construction hints.

Chris Cain found a 7-glider synthesis here.

Chris also found a 60-glider synthesis of a pufferfish spaceship in February 2015 (see here under edit 5).

Edit: I put together a 48-glider synthesis of 25P3H1V0.2 here.

We're up to 68 Did-You-Knows on the LifeWiki, and I'm temporarily out of inspiration again. There are seven spaces left to fill in the current list (though of course we could add more).

So what else is new and/or surprising, that hasn't been mentioned yet?

As far as non-c/12 puffers go, I know a double blinker puffer showed up recently, but that was from a symmetric soup. The periods of all of Catagolue's C1 linear-growth patterns look suspiciously like multiples of 96.

While they are combinations of switch engines, they are not all combinations of block-laying and glider-producing switch engines per se.

User testitemqlstudop has proposed a CA question-gathering Q&A site on Stack Exchange. It has already gathered a few questions that could be adapted into LifeWiki Did-You-Knows (or more often there's already a related did-you-know in the list.) I still have a completely arbitrary goal of a hundred Did-You-Knows, and this Q&A site might be a good source of new ideas if it can be gotten off the ground...!

Currently the site needs 47 more followers to progress to the next level. That's certainly within reach with a little effort. When y'all have a moment, please follow and ask a question (forty more of those are needed too). It doesn't have to be the best question anyone ever thought of -- if it's something you don't know the answer to, there will be other people out there who don't know it either.

Seems to me that "Thread for your basic questions" type Q&A would be fine to add, though most of what has been added so far isn't really so basic.
