Or-ing. It's one of the paste modes in Golly; you can cycle between the 4 modes by pressing "M". If you paste the clipboard into an existing pattern in Or-mode, then a cell will be present if it was already present OR if it's present in the clipboard.

You can also reflect or rotate the thing being pasted by pressing "x", "y", "<", or ">" before you click where you want the paste to happen.

So to make a pattern symmetric across the northwest-southeast diagonal, I do this:

type command-A (select pattern)
type command-C (copy it to clipboard)
type command-V (prepare to paste it)
type "x<" (reflect across diagonal)
type "M" as often as needed to get to Or-mode
click where I want to paste

Did you mean "octagonal"? I can't see anything polyhedral about this result (unless you stacked each generation above the one after it, then it would look like the tip of an octagonal pyramid)

Andrew Trevorrow has suggested the name "roomba bug" for objects like this, because of their resemblance to some robotic vacuum cleaners.

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

I've removed the ":T10000,10000" suffix from the rules in the above post. Using a torus (or bounded plane) that size is just a huge waste of memory. Note that Golly 3.0b2 (out in the next day or two) will support unbounded universes. Patterns in such universes run slightly faster and typically use a lot less memory than a bounded universe, so unless you have good reasons for using a torus or bounded plane best not to post rules with a suffix.

Has anyone tried making spaceships faster than 250c? That one method used to make the 92c/2 spaceship could very well be used to make a 996c/2 ship.

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

I will make an "internet stuff" folder of the collection. When will we find a ship that is comparable to real life? So far the slowest speed found, c/40368 is still 7k meters a second. Faster than sound. For reference, the top speed for a passenger airline is 257 meters/second. To reach that, the ship would need to be slower than c/1,000,000

That one adjustable speeds rule is always your friend. Also, Life's elbow ladders can be ridiculously slow with enough distance. Although both of these aren't necessarily Larger than Life rules.

I wonder: when will we find a ship that is about as fast as the growth of toenails?

I was thinking of an elementary non-adjustable ship.

I have calculated that if a ship were to go fast as toenails grow, the ship would need to be around c/43,000,000,000,000,000. That's 43 Quintillion.
