H-to-H conduit collection

Post by gmc_nxtman » August 20th, 2016, 12:57 pm

This thread is for discussing the maintenance of the H-to-H conduit collection, whether it be conduits that I have missed, errors in the labeling of conduits, or other errors.

The latest version of the collection:
h-to-h-collection-26Aug2017.zip
(59.64 KiB) Downloaded 419 times
Previous version of the collection:
h-to-h-collection-20Aug2017.mc.gz
(80.6 KiB) Downloaded 388 times
The criteria for adding conduits to this collection:

•No conduits with a bounding box of over 100*100
•No conduits with a travel time of over 300
•No conduits with repeat time over 500
•There may not be any intermediate stages in the conduit in which there is an active Herschel or glider with no debris
•All catalysts must survive until the end of the travel time

Changelog:

Code: Select all

//This is the changelog for updates made to the H-to-H conduit collection.

//"Unrecorded changes" means I was too lazy to sort out minor changes.

August 26, 2017 (by dvgrn):

-Removed tick mark feature from the collection completely due to all conduits being provably glider-constructible
-Compressed collection into a .zip file, allowing for better comments and links

August 21, 2017 (by gmc_nxtman):

-Removed more tick marks on conduits

August 20, 2017 (by gmc_nxtman):

-Removed all adjustable/transceiver conduits

Here's a version of the H-to-H collection that I have staged for checkin to Golly 3.0:
h-to-h-collection-20Aug2017.mc.gz
11 November 2016 collection plus three updates
(80.6 KiB) Downloaded 382 times
Change log: The additions are F131 and Lx134. R64 has been split into "a" and "b" versions. Previously the quoted recovery time was 61, which requires a 7x9 eater that was not shown. The recovery time for a Spartan R64 is 153 ticks.

Here are the comments that are currently included with the file:

Code: Select all

#C Herschel conduit collection compiled by gmc_nxtman
#C -- contains all small stable H-to-H conduits known as of 20 August 2017,
#C where "small" means the travel time is not greater than 300,
#C and the conduit fits inside a 100x100 bounding box.
#C The names include a directional prefix --
#C (F=forward, R=turn right, L=turn left, B=turned back, x=flipped)
#C followed by the number of steps needed to produce the output Herschel.
#C Tick mark "-" means no glider construction is known.
#C First parentheses: minimum recovery time for circuit.
#C Second and optional third parentheses: x, y offset for Herschel output.
#C
#C Reaction envelopes of conduits are shown in LifeHistory state 2 (blue).
#C To activate a conduit, change the red input Herschel cells on the left
#C to state 3. To convert to 2-state Life format use ToLife.lua.
It seems too much to hope that everything is exactly right in this file. Now would be a good time for everyone to take a careful look, and patch anything that still needs patching...!

Nice work on the new update. The comments are quite comprehensive, although it might be good to link to the forum post:

Code: Select all

#C http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2347&p=34533#p34533

I updated the tick marks "-" in the collection, as F131 and Fx176b seem non-trivial to construct, and many conduits seem trivial to construct.

I'm not sure how to include pattern comments in a compressed macrocell file. I will upload the compressed version, with my nit-picks, but it doesn't contain pattern comments, and I'm not going to add it to the original post yet:

EDIT: Removed transceivers.

EDIT2: Changed some more stator variants to be trivially glider-constructible.

Thanks! Yeah, pattern comments are kind of annoying for compressed files. Once they're there, Golly will keep them around -- meaning you can edit the pattern and re-save, but there's no way to change the comments.

The workaround is to save in a non-compressed format, edit it to add the comments, and then build the .gz version manually with a separate tool like 7-Zip. I'll take care of that part. Now that you mention it, several other forum links would probably be nice to add, especially one to the Elementary Conduits Collection.

But why stop there? There's also the Period multiplicating thread, and the Still life "factories" thread and the H-to-G/2G thread, any of which could be useful to someone looking at Herschel conduits. The current latest version of those collections will also end up in the Online Archives (Very Large Patterns)... soonish... but I don't have to have that done before the 3.0 release.

Would you (@gmc_nxtman, or anyone really) be interested in creating and maintaining a Herschel transceivers thread, that I could also link to in the H-to-H pattern comments? It can be just a placeholder for now, as long as I get the link in there and checked in. I'd create the thread myself, but it's starting to feel like I have first-post responsibility for a few too many of these stamp-collection threads already...!

In that case, here is an reasonably final (uncompressed) version of the collection, with all but three conduits having a proof of constructibility. The links to other threads aren't quite done yet:

I haven't added those links, but perhaps they could be formatted like this?

Code: Select all

#C
#C For more information on conduits, see:

Additionally, if the H-to-G/2G thread is going to be linked, the next project should be to update that collection, and possibly include that in golly. I might be mistaken, but I believe the latest version is of October 21, 2016. I'll see if I can do a quick search in those sorts of threads for x-to-g conduits found since then.

Sure, I already have a small file containing some receivers - I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to stamp collection maintenance myself, but I'll work on it.

Something like that. I'll probably double or triple the number of comment lines, so that each URL gets a specific label and people can go straight to the Elementary Conduits Collection thread or whatever.

Or what I might do instead is to change the H-to-H pattern to a ZIP file, and include an HTML document in the ZIP file, with all of those links and a little more text to explain them. That way whenever the collection is opened, you'll get a second HTML window that puts you only two clicks away from any related thread you might want.
test.zip
Sample file with associated (random) HTML page
(92.83 KiB) Downloaded 371 times
This doesn't work quite the way that I would like. I think the HTML page should open automatically, instead of opening an auto-generated HTML page that points to it. In other words, I think the rule should really be "A "simple" zip file contains at most one pattern, at most one script, and at most one HTML or text file." Will see if it's too late to make that adjustment for Golly 3.0...!

What do you think -- would it be too annoying to have to click to dismiss that helpful HTML window, for the times when you don't want it? Obviously anyone who wants to can re-save the file and open that instead of the ZIP.

Sounds like a plan. I'm definitely going to include the H-to-G/2G collections as part of 3.0, but the files are too big to be part of the base installer. I only got away with the H-to-H collection because I could replace the older out-of-date version.

The Gang in general would like to keep the main Golly package nice and small. It might creep up another few megabytes eventually, but for the pattern collection we're trying to stay away from the everything-including-the-kitchen-sink mentality. That tendency used to make kind of a mess of pattern collections for previous Life editor/simulators.

The Very Large Patterns collection in the Online Archives is definitely fair game, though, and it's only a few clicks away under Golly > Help. Just have to get people used to using it. Which means putting a lot more good stuff in it -- archives with lots of patterns, as well as just big individual files -- and probably organizing it into sections or something.

Again, until Golly 3.0 ships, I have all kinds of other utility scripts and such that need to be fixed up and added. So I'll start on checking in the various stamp collections and suchlike, after Golly 3.0 is out the door -- the Very Large Patterns landing page isn't part of the release, so it can be updated any time.

EDIT: Andrew suggests turning the stamp collection and HTML file into a Lua script. Obvious with hindsight... Come to think of it, I can just as well keep the ZIP file idea, but turn only the HTML file into a Lua script -- that way the ZIP file is still "simple". I'll experiment with that a little, and check something in shortly.

This seems to do pretty much what I wanted it to do. Any opinions about including the H-to-H stamp collection in Golly in this form? I.e., is this kind of thing a useful tool for providing URLs directly as links without having to copy and paste them out of Pattern Info?
h-to-h-collection-21Aug2017.zip

...Or have I just invented pop-ups in Golly, and now somebody is going to have to invent a GollyAdBlocker to counteract them?

Anyone who doesn't want to see the links every time, can save the .mc file and delete the zip. Doesn't seem too painful... given that most Golly users aren't actually going to open the H-to-H collection more than once anyway. (?)

This seems good, it probably would have been a little too cluttered in just the pattern comments, although it would be nicer if pattern comments were more stylized and customizable in the first place.

Additionally, the tick-mark feature is no longer necessary, thanks to progress over on the Synthesising Oscillators thread.

Yup, I just checked in the following file, removing three tick marks and the line about tick marks in the comments:

Here's hoping I didn't miss anything. Time is getting kind of short...!

I guess I never followed through with this promise --

Nice! I'll add this in the next update.
That unfortunately makes one of Extrementhusiast's impressively complicated catalyst syntheses (technically) unnecessary... but at least the complicated version(s) are provably constructible.

Anyway, I finally updated the original post with the proper file and changelog. If there are any more errors or omissions, aside from the aforementioned instance, please let me know :)

EDIT: I also just noticed that the eater5 variant in R64b is technically non-trivial... will replace it with a trivial one in the next update. Also, it probably makes sense to change the stator variants of a lot of conduits.

Re: H-to-H conduit collection

I spent some time late last night rediscovering Kazyan's HR48B, which is already in the Elementary Conduits collection, and is used in the Lx235 in the H-to-H collection. It has now been added to the period multiplier collection, along with the tremi-Snark. But just so it gets a little more use, here's a new composite Herschel conduit with a decent repeat time:

Code: Select all

Also I can't find any mention that HRx48 plus a boojum reflector/rectifier makes a clean composite R68 Herschel conduit... with truly absymal repeat time, something over 300, but that's inside the rather generous criteria for gmc_nxtman's collection. It can be a good bit smaller if the previous conduit is an Fx77. And it could be overclocked, if that was somehow useful somewhere. The R turn is almost the same as R64, but the output is two cells farther south and four ticks slower:
