I also had what seemed to be a promising lead on a (3,1)c/4, but it didn't prove tractable.
Nice result! Considering the rarity of 3c/4 ships, (3,1)c/4 would be pretty incredible.
Saka wrote:I've modified rulesrc to only return b-ships if they have an odd period and the results are GREAT (All oblique so far!!)
This inspired my to hook up rulesrc.py to my small ships search script and I ran a search overnight with the b-heptomino restricted to rules matching the evolution for 4 generations. All I can say is that the results reinforce my belief that there are a lot of small ships in the 2-state isotropic CA rule-space. A LOT.

Edited to include examples:
Highest period ships of each class:

ortho 12c/1010

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = B2n3-cenq4cw5acy6in78/S2-i3-aek4-ajktw5cijn6cin8

3o$2bo$2bo$bo!
End edit

In total, there were 10,560 results. Of those, there are 4634 orthogonal ships, 4543 diagonal ships and 1250 oblique ships, for a total of 10,427 unique ships. There's a chance this includes some of the ones posted above, but I think it's unlikely.

Lots of ships having one phase which is a B-heptomino

I've attached the results in an archive with three files for orthogonal, diagonal and oblique ships. All files have one ship per line in my custom format and are sorted first by period, and then displacement. The ships are stored in a phase with minimum population, but they all have one phase which is a B. The format is:

Code: Select all

min pop, min isotropic rule, x displacement, y displacement, period, rle string
and all ships are oriented according to the 5S project guidelines. If you copy one line to the clipboard you can use the following script to load it into the current layer.

Code: Select all

# display_ship.py
# This script will take a string representing a ship with some additional metadata,
# and display it in the current layer
# It first checks the clipboard for a valid string and then requests input if necessary
# There is minimal error checking
# ship format: ['pop', 'rule', 'dx', 'dy', 'period', 'rle']

import golly as g

def parseshipstr(shipstr):
    if not shipstr[0] in '123456789':
        return
    ship = shipstr.split(', ')
    if not len(ship) == 6:
        return
    return ship

shipstr = g.getclipstr()
ship = parseshipstr(shipstr)
if not ship:
    shipstr = g.getstring('Enter ship string:')
ship = parseshipstr(shipstr)
if not ship:
    g.exit('Invalid ship string: ' + shipstr)

rulestr = ship[1].strip()
shiprle = ship[5].strip()

g.new('')
g.setrule(rulestr)
g.putcells(g.parse(shiprle))

g.fit()
I know I'm terrible at keeping these promises, but keep an eye on the rulesrc.py script thread for an update from me. My biggest problem with this is that I just don't know what to do with the flood of results that the script outputs. Did I mention that there are a lot of small ships out there?
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

3c/4 dot puffer, can someone make a higher period (than 4) spaceship out of these?

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

The new 12c/16, while composed of two copies of the new 6c/8, is only two cells larger due to extreme spark suppression.

Nice work! What was the lead on the (3,1)c/4? Maybe (3,1)c/5 or (3,1)c/6 would be easier to find.

I lost it, but I'm fairly confident that one exists.
EDIT: A 6-cell (6,2)c/8:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B2acn3aek4ar5a/S2ack3c4er5eq
o$2bo$2bo$bo$obo!
EDIT 2: P4 version ((3,1)c/4), 8 cells:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B2ac3aek4ar5ae/S2ack3c4er5eq
2bo$b2o$3o$o$o!
It's also mildly interesting that both are polyominoes in a phase.
EDIT 3: My new favorite replicator:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = B2ac3aek4ar5ae/S2ack3c4er5eq

Oh yay

So, assuming you're not correct in your saying that (4,1)c/5 is impossible, maybe you should try working on finding a ship of said speed to see if that statement really is correct.

I have a feeling that (4,1)c/5 is either impossible, or out of current reach. (3,2)c/5 or (3,1)c/5 might be possible though. Also, nice with the backrake! That is kind of freaky.

My script is nearly done!
(7,2)c/23

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-cky4iryz5ce6a7c8/S2aek3-aeky5e6c
bo$3o$ob2o!
c/21o

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B2in3-ck4ceqtyz5ceky8/S2aek3-acy4ceqy5ijk6ik
bo$3o$ob2o!
Yes!! Now I just need to make it keep going forever without stopping.
YES DONE
Steepest yet:
(10,1)c/29

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-ekny4j5y6n/S1c2aek3ijnqr5ik
bo$3o$ob2o!
First diagonal:
c/19d

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-ekn4jry5ac6i/S1c2aek3-acky4z5i6ek8
bo$3o$ob2o!
New steepness record:
(14,1)c/31

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-cekn4jz6c/S2-ci3-aek4q5c6ekn
bo$3o$ob2o!

The best gun I've ever discovered!!!-possibly the first elementary 8-direction 12-fold gun!!

Code: Select all

x = 59, y = 79, rule = B3aijq4en5r/S2-ci3-aey4eiz5in6a
