What time is it?

Update time!

9 conduits added from this thread since 13 April--I haven't checked the rest of the forum. If there are other conduits worthy of inclusion, or errata in this update, please notify me.

You missed Simeks' RF48H variant:

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 30, rule = LifeHistory
16.2A$12.2A2.A$12.A.A.A$13.B.A4.A$8.6B4.3A$7.8B2.A$7.7B3.2A$7.7B2.3B$
6.11B4.2B2.2B$5.4BC18BD$4.5B2C17BDBD$4.4B2C18B3DB$3.27BD$4.25B$4.18B.
B$4.15B$4.16B9.2A$3.17B5.A3.2A$3.16B5.A.A$4.13B6.A.A$4.8B.2B8.A$6.5B
3.AB6.2A$6.5B2.A.A$4.6B3.2A$4.4B$4.2B2AB$2.2AB.2A$.A.AB$.A$2A!
It does provide an advantage over other R->Hs because it is the only conduit that can connect to BFx176R.

Thanks, @gmc_nxtman!

Here's an updated version, also with three more conduits.
The former "RF48He" that was unusual was relocated and renamed "RF48Hf". The @simeks variant is now "RF48He".

Also these B->Gs from simeks. The last one is a little bit weird. He had an H-to-B and B-to-W in that post as well but I don't think they can connect to anything.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 39, rule = LifeHistory
.4B$2.4B$3.4B$4.4B$5.4B$6.4B$7.4B$8.4B10.A$9.4B8.A.A$10.4B7.A.A$11.4B

13.2D$12.2D$13.2D$2.2C$.C.C$.C$2C16.C$17.C.C$17.2C!
By the way, BR24B, HF110B, HB56B, HL153B, HF144B_adjustable, PB(x)137B, BF137H, all use the wrong B-heptomino relative:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory

Looks great! After things settle down and don't change for a week or two, I'll update the files in the first post in this thread, and add a list there of all the conduit names. The August 5 collection is up to 408 conduits, I believe:

I'd better post this quick so it can be a useful starting point for the next update.

Some of the glider-related labels have mutated beyond my ability to interpret them. I think I understand the negative numbers in "G-19G-17FxR" and so on, though those lane numbers are relative to the output R-pentomino, where other glider lane numbers are for output gliders, relative to the input object.

I think I might rather just have "G2" as the input object in this name -- i.e., "G2FxR". Seems more readable, and the "G-19G-17" isn't really quite enough information to do anything useful with -- it wouldn't tell an automated circuit-builder script which glider has to come in first, or what relative timings are allowed. It's hard to define orientation relative to tandem gliders, though -- if it's an Fx then why not have the output R heading to the right? And offhand I can't figure out why the numbers aren't "G-18G-16", so maybe I'm interpreting them wrong. (?)

Another random question: where does the "o" come from in GNEo_Snark?

Ahh, thanks. I was too lazy to rename the internal folder.

When I first expanded the nomenclature in November, I don't think I had much idea what to do with incoming gliders. The "timing+lane" method worked for outputs, so I decided to adapt glider lanes to the inputs, rejecting timing information as being too cumbersome.

I arbitrarily defined the "forward" orientation of a glider to be SE-travelling with three of its cells in a horizontal line. In the "G-19G-17FxR" example, those orientations projected forward to a horizontal or vertical line of the forward-travelling R are 17 and 19 lanes away from the center of the output, as you figured out. The pseudo-mirror-image pair should indeed be "G16G18RR" under the current scheme, that is an error. Note that the ordering does matter somewhat--the first glider in each pattern displayed should delete a junk object/prepare the converter, and the second should create the output object. Failing that, the default is to assign more positive lane numbers to either input or output in case of multiple options.

A degenerate case occurs with 90-degree G-G converters. There, the output lanes of the gliders are not fixed, but can be adjusted by two at a time, the constraint being glider color. Thus, the lane markings are "o" for odd lanes and "e" for even lanes. "GNEo" is thus an odd-lane (colour-preserving) 90-degree reflector.

That being said, I do agree tandem glider inputs in the form "GxGy" should be shortened to "G(x-y)"--all of those seemed a little clunky, but as I said before, I didn't know enough about nomenclature back then.

So would the sign of the difference indicate the relative ordering of the glider pairs?
EDIT: And for the sake of connecting tandem signal receivers to tandem signal generators, should information concerning minimum spacing be included in the name of the conduit?
i.e. seeing as how the gliders in this pattern cannot be vertically offset by less than is shown here (i.e. 25 ticks), could this pattern (curr. labeled G25G31BH) be labeled G6T25BH?

It is, but there are so many of the same kind that allows the FNG (first natural glider) to escape and then just kills off the rest of the reaction.

It would make sense to have the most useful ones in the collection, and that one with the two blocks, which has been known for a long time, should perhaps be listed.

Anyway, here are a few of the smallest H-to-FNG:

Found a new unusually-dependent conduit, based on the shillelagh+bun catalysis recently posted:

Any conduit with that particular start can follow this one.

(Now, which well-known business can this be named after?)

Also, a variant of a known conduit that produces an LWSS but consumes a block on the edge:

Isn't it part of the H-LWSS in the collection?

It is, and after not realizing that until I went to check, I have a new appreciation for how all the lanes were somehow cleared for the LWSS's exit.

Alternate stabilization for the recent H-to-G9:

Code: Select all

Unfortunately, it doesn't allow for the extra G1 glider output.

EDIT: And an alternate stabilization of SE23T-6:

I like this one, it allows to use H-to-P-to-W-to-H with repeat time under 74 (syringe standard), I think there was no way to do so with P or W before.

Simpler, smaller catalyst (EDIT: Another cell smaller and compatible with the variant eater1):

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 20, rule = LifeHistory

A$4.2A7.2B3.5B6.2A!
Allots a tad more space on the right if it's ever needed:

Code: Select all

Feels like that the W-to-H is the only thing that can be used afterward, so getting rid of that glider inbound is kind of mandatory, I made it more compact using your improvement.

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 20, rule = LifeHistory
8.6B3.2A2.2A$8.7B2.A.A2.A$9.6B4.2A.A.2A$9.6B4.A2.A.A$8.3B2AB7.2A2.A$

9B.A$3.2AB2.9BCDC8B$4.A4.7BACBCA7B$.3A3.2AB.6BDBD6B.B2A$.A4.A.AB.6B.
8B.BA.A$6.A5.5B.7B5.A$5.2A7.2B3.5B6.2A!
That being said, I should mention that I was wrong for the repeat time, there is one with the same that is already known (but it is not as compact):

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 45, rule = LifeHistory
3$8.2A$9.A6.2A$9.A.AB.2B2AB$10.2AB.4B$6.A4.8B$6.3A3.9B$9.A2.9B$8.2A.

However, what is true is that a h-to-h in the collection can have its repeat time improved 75->68

Code: Select all

x = 117, y = 86, rule = LifeHistory
68.A.A$68.2A.A$71.3A$68.2A4.A$68.A.5A$70.A21.A$52.2A15.A2.B2A2.2B13.

Here are a few other ways of dealing with that glider. First, with a regular eater5 or sidesnagger -- the sidesnagger can be adjusted SE by up to three cells, and an eater5 variant will fit as far down as 5 cells SEward, but it's nice to be able to get them out of the way to the NW. Maybe they can go a cell or two farther NW with the right weld:

If a dependent conduit follows the new improved Fx176 -- we have quite a few dependent conduits now, not just the old F166 or Lx200 choices -- then the dependent conduit's "first unnatural glider" can actually escape.

That wasn't true for the original Fx176, or A for awesome's original improvement. It can really make the Fx176 a lot more useful to have another optional signal output from the next conduit -- it was always a big annoyance not being able to get that glider out. So that's probably another new H-to-2G worth adding to the toolkit.

There's even enough room to fit a Snark in after an Lx200 turn, which might also come in handy:

Code: Select all

I think this is a new R-to-G (shown here with two variants), but my on-desktop reference files are getting a little dated:

I'm not finding it offhand, but also am not finding a lot of conduits that it will usefully connect to. It works with HLx111R to make an H-to-G that might come in handy sometime, but I'm not sure how:

SW-22 is such a backwards lane that the glider is usually going to dive right into the middle of the previous conduit and make a mess of the catalysts, though maybe there are a few interesting exceptions somewhere. There isn't enough room to allow a Snark to reflect the output glider, so a transparent lane would have be found -- or possibly a dirty conduit that happens to be cleanable with this particular glider, but the odds seem fairly low. The hypothetical dirty conduit would have to make something interesting, since otherwise the whole conglomeration will just be a big slow inefficient Herschel eater.

So... what else am I missing, that this R-to-G might usefully connect to? EDIT: Added in a sample pattern from chris_c's example below -- kind of a steampunk mixture of old and new tech, which all adds up to not really useful and not worth making a new post about:
