Building a reverse caber-tosser

Post by calcyman » March 30th, 2018, 9:28 am

Recall the theorem that there's some fixed number N such that any pattern with a glider synthesis can be synthesised in N or fewer gliders.

It relies on a construction of a pattern which can produce a binary stream according to the distance between two separated initial islands. The most cost-effective way to do this would be to build a reverse caber-tosser, where a glider bounces between some fixed circuitry and an approaching Cordership. The fixed circuitry needs to successively tap off the least significant bits of the initial distance between itself and the Cordership.

Does anyone have a reaction where a glider approaches a Cordership head-on and is reflected in the opposite direction? In the interests of minimising N, the Cordership should be as simple as possible.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Cost-effective in terms of population, you mean? The faraway block has been replaced by a faraway Cordership, so you'll have to make up for that by simpler circuitry.

The block push-and-pull shotguns will go away, but you'll still probably need a multi-glider salvo that uses an edge spark of a 2-engine Cordership to get a glider back, plus whatever timing-adjustment circuitry is needed to hit the Cordership at the right phase.

Then the circuit that extracts the least significant bits, in base 2 or base 3 or whatever, will probably be about the same size... I guess maybe it will come out a bit smaller on balance, but it doesn't seem quite certain until we know what the value of N is.

You put your two gliders in, you take your two gliders out, you put your two gliders in, and you shake yourself about; you do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around; that's what it's all about!

This is wonderful; thank you! That pair of gliders can be produced by two outputs of a single p256 gun, and I think that by some clever rerouting of the remaining barrels, it can be made to suppress itself except when the returning gliders knock out a glider in the stream.

This ended up being simpler than I anticipated. Watch the pattern below and see the gaps in the two glider streams. The sequence of gaps is:

Upper, Lower, Lower, Lower, Upper, Lower, Upper, (!!!)

and, by moving the Cordership, can encode an arbitrary binary string.

Code: Select all

This is certainly simpler than having a pair of sliding-block-memories and corresponding control circuitry.

Yes, it definitely looks simpler. I was thinking of ways of turning this binary stream into something that allows universal construction. This is the best idea I had so far. If there is ever a gap in stream A then the next gap in stream B gives an extra glider output. Something like this should be sufficient for universal construction because we can encode PUSH operations with stream A, PULL operations with stream B and FIRE operations on a transition A->B.

Re: Building a reverse caber-tosser

Post by Goldtiger997 » April 28th, 2018, 7:02 am

I've been having a go at synthesizing calcyman's reverse caber tosser from two posts above. So far I've created a "final step" for it, which reduces the problem to synthesizing a bunch of blocks, boats, eaters, one beehive, and many figure eights:

Code: Select all

x = 993, y = 875, rule = B3/S23

I've omitted the trivially synthesisable cordership, and adjusted the pattern slightly to make it easier to synthesize (but that it still works, I think). There's probably several reductions that can easily be made.

The next step is working out how to synthesize the still-lifes and figure eights cheaply. I've found synthesize for some of the 2 block combinations, but I doubt that all the figure eights can be made with 4 gliders each.

Anyway, I was thinking that a cool and amusing test of this project if/when it's finished would be to synthesize N loafers with N gliders (where N is the upper bound of all synthesis costs resulting from this project).

Looks good! Only a few figure-eights to go, and then the rest looks pretty easy -- with the caveat that a lot of the block constellations will have cheaper syntheses than the trivial two gliders per block.

Well, we still have to connect the caber tosser's output to something that allows for universal construction, like chris_c's suggestion.

As I understand it, we'll have to build the cheapest possible glider-constructible shotgun that we can think of, that can do a PUSH operation on a construction-arm elbow

-- and another shotgun to do a relatively-prime PULL operation

-- and one more to produce a 90-degree glider from the elbow.

(If there are clever ways to use parts of one shotgun to produce gliders for part of another salvo, we might want to do that. Whatever it takes to arrive at the absolute minimal mechanism.)

Then we synthesize all those mechanisms in combination with the caber tosser.

Then we count the total number of gliders in the combined synthesis.

Then we add nine gliders to construct a 2-engine Cordership Painfully Far Away (TM). Might need to add a few more gliders for kickbacks, amusingly, so that all those Cordership synthesis gliders can come from infinity -- some of them might pass through the construction zone and hit SE-traveling gliders coming in to build the reverse caber tosser.

That total count will be the upper bound for the largest number of gliders needed to synthesize any glider-constructible object, even fleets containing zillions of Geminis, Demonoids, Orthogonoids, and/or 0E0P metacells.

We could add two separate shotguns for the two colors of glider outputs, to make the construction arm a lot easier to program -- but we shouldn't do that.

First off, chris_c's design only has three possible signal outputs, so there's nothing to connect the extra shotgun to anyway. But also, any unnecessary addition to the mechanism would increase the number of gliders needed in the Demonoid-or-whatever recipe, and the idea is to do everything we can to minimize that number.

Making the construction arm more efficient at the cost of adding more mechanism would reduce the bounding box of the glider synthesis of (say) a Demonoid, from Astronomical Cubed to Astronomical Squared (or something like that).

But we really don't care if we have to put the nine Cordership gliders a bajillion times farther away to complete the recipe. If we have any kind of universal construction mechanism, no matter how inefficient, it will win the competition as long as it takes fewer gliders to synthesize than any other mechanism.

Make sense (sort of)?

I've now completed the synthesis of the reverse caber tosser. Here's what comes before the first step in the synthesis in my above post, turned into one long continuous synthesis (132 gliders):

...though actually the synthesis isn't technically complete. I replaced a block with a pond to save a glider (the pond synthesis could dodge the figure eights), and most of the figure eights have the wrong timings. However, these should be fairly easy to fix.

I'll probably make a continuous synthesis for the whole reverse caber tosser (minus cordership) fairly soon, unless someone beats me to it and/or makes improvements.

Yeah thanks, that was very helpful (though I also used this thread). I now believe I understand the idea fully, and the way it works is even cooler than I thought. Here's what I think the next steps needed to finish the "Build Anything Constructible with a Fixed Number of Gliders" project, if I'm understanding it correctly:

Optional steps are marked with a "*".
1. "Finish" the reverse caber tosser synthesis
2*. Attempt to improve chris_c's "binary stream to universal constructor device"
3*. Try to find a better (than this one) construction arm
4. Create a cheaply synthesizable shotgun for the construction arm salvo
5. Cheaply redirect the PUSH, PULL, and FIRE gliders to delete (or similar) particular gliders from the shotgun, presumably by reflectors
6. Synthesize the patterns made in steps 2, 4, and 5.
7. Assemble this synthesis with the reverse caber tosser synthesis and a cordership synthesis
8. Enjoy a really cool pattern
9*. (probably really hard) create a script that converts a P1 slow salvo into a synthesis of the above mentioned components by placing the cordership in a calculated position.

That all seems about right. For steps 3 through 5, we could just build separate shotguns for PUSH, PULL, and FIRE, or combine two of them and leave the third separate, or arrange it so that one or more of the input signals is bounced directly in with reflectors to become part of the salvo -- whatever turns out to be cheapest.
Goldtiger997 wrote:9*. (probably really hard) create a script that converts a P1 slow salvo into a synthesis of the above mentioned components by placing the cordership in a calculated position.
It may not really be worth calculating the precise position of the Cordership synthesis in practice -- it's simple enough math, but for any construction where it would make sense to use this method, the coordinates would have an impressive number of digits. The slow salvo not only has to build something that takes more than N gliders (whatever N turns out to be) to construct in the normal way, but it also has to build a seed for a "meteor shower" that will shoot down the entire reverse caber tosser!

We could build an example meteor shower seed if we wanted to, once all the construction-arm shotguns and so forth are complete, but it isn't really necessary because -- strange but true -- no matter how inefficient it is, it doesn't change the total glider count.

The slow salvo will have to be monochromatic, which is a painfully inefficient construction method that hasn't gotten much exercise since the half-baked knightship. So if we wanted to build a compiler, we couldn't use most of the current slmake. We'd have to start over, except presumably we could filter out the monochromatic part of the slmake database.

Technically it won't quite have to be a pure P1 slow salvo: there can be P2 intermediate targets, it's just that the two phases of each P2 object can't be swapped by waiting for one tick, the way you can in a P2 slow salvo. I forget now if I ever tried to give a name to that particular slow salvo flavor, but if I did I guess it didn't stick...

In practice we might find it a bit difficult to write a script to compile a slow salvo for any of the cases this reverse caber tosser idea is designed for -- a Demonoid, or any other large pattern that needs more than N gliders to construct. First we might want a script that compiles any stream of gliders into an equivalent stable seed constellation that can be triggered by one glider, and then we might be getting somewhere.

(I've wanted a script like that for a while anyway. It will allow for some new and entertaining types of self-constructing patterns.)

... Actually what we might be able to do is get simeks interested in running some new searches. We know that there are 0-degree elbow recipes out there somewhere that can produce output gliders on any lane, even or odd, using only monochromatic slow gliders aimed at a block. We just have no idea what the cheapest such recipes are.

With a monochromatic 0-degree toolkit in hand, the compiler script would become relatively easy to write. Then slmake could be used for everything beyond the 0-degree elbow, once the pattern has been successfully converted into seed-constellation form.

A freeze-dried waterbear would be a fun project, though maybe a bit ambitious for a first attempt. Maybe one of David Bell's new single-switch-engine Corderships, or something like that?

chris_c's design is beautiful, and definitely in the spirit of making the circuitry as simple as possible (to reduce N) without any regard to practicality. Continuing in this vein:

If you can show that monochromatic monophase slow-salvo gliders are capable of moving a sub-elbow and emitting the four different flavours (phase/colour combinations) of perpendicular gliders, then you inherit all of the beautiful slmake power at the expense of having two elbows instead of one. And this only gives a constant-factor overhead in the number of bits in the recipe, or a polynomial overhead in the distance to the approaching Cordership.

Let's try to get everything down to fewer than 2018 gliders, and finished by the end of 2018.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

So... are we going to bother to put in an eater for the approaching Cordership? Or just an "absorber", I suppose, something the Cordership can crash into and leave little or no debris:

Code: Select all

x = 95, y = 97, rule = B3/S23

#C [[ STEP 16 ]]
At a fairly ridiculous expense, an eater or absorber can be built later on by the salvo encoded by the Cordership, saving a few more gliders. Just have to have some way to get the Cordership under control before it crashes into the reverse caber tosser, so that the meteor-shower seed has something predictable to clean up.

Probably just build the two blocks as an early construction step. If those blocks were constructed last we'd have to worry about possible interference with gliders going back and forth to the Cordership (maybe?), but that certainly won't be a problem while the Cordership is still Far, Far Away. No need to bother with the boats since they just suppress blocks that the meteor shower will be able to clean up with no problem.

Given past experience with the HBK, that shouldn't be too hard. Basically you just build and trigger one-time turners -- can pick known four Blockic ones if necessary, to make the proof really simple. These four should be good enough:

So then we just need a monochromatic recipe toolkit that can duplicate blocks and place them in these four patterns, at the right offset to be triggered by the last monochromatic glider in the recipe. That doesn't seem like too tall an order. Anybody remember what was collected along these lines for the HBK turner recipes?

-- I was thinking more in terms of a "0-degree elbow", but that adds an unnecessary limitation: you could only build slow salvos up to the width of your 0-degree glider toolkit. Of course we can do the same kind of trick with one-time turners to make a recipe for a 0-degree glider of either parity on any chosen lane, but the recipes would get unwieldy for large lane offsets.
calcyman wrote:Let's try to get everything down to fewer than 2018 gliders, and finished by the end of 2018.
The first part at least should be an easy target. So far Goldtiger997 has only used up 131 + 132 + 9 = 272 gliders. Seems like we'll still be down somewhere in the three-digit range after adding the construction-arm piece, won't we?

The math seems to come out to each new bit arriving from the Cordership in half the time required to produce the previous bit. So it looks like an N-bit recipe will take something like k * 2^N ticks to build. What's the exact multiplier k? Seems to be less than 2850, and I should just think about it until it's obvious.

Here's a version of chris_c's decoder using only one 4-barrelled p256 gun, shown attached to the original reverse caber-tosser:

Goldtiger's synthesis suffices for the reverse caber tosser, and the decoder should be simple enough to synthesise as well.

All three output lanes are south-east, so the construction arm assembly can be placed arbitrarily far from the existing assembly.

Here's what it looks like after 357888 generations:

Re: Building a reverse caber-tosser

I tried adding in a minimal Cordership stopper, but then realized that two blocks is not good enough. After the Cordership is gone, the reverse caber tosser throws two more gliders toward Far, Far Away -- and if they're not stopped, they're actually going to get there eventually! Can't have the synthesis messed up like that.

Should be a simple matter of finding any random junk that can be placed in the path of the incoming Cordership, that

1) stops the Cordership without producing any gliders, and

2) happens to throw a couple of pieces of ash in the way of the two outgoing gliders.

It doesn't matter how complicated the Cordership-Stopping Junk is, or how much ash it leaves behind, as long as it doesn't let any gliders or spaceships escape. Construction of the Cordership-Stopping Junk, and construction of the meteor-shower seed for Stopped Cordership Ash, can both be done with a temporary elbow... so the value of N doesn't change, as long as the constellation is constructible and can be reached by temporarily bending the construction arm around some number of corners.

Similarly, the seeds of destruction to make the entire assembly cleanly disappear can also be constructed by the recipe (because, after all, we're trying to show that any glider-constructible pattern can be cleanly synthesised in N gliders). So those seeds don't contribute to the value of N, either.

I guess this means that the only remaining component is a shotgun operated by the PUSH/PULL/FIRE gliders.
-- Did I get the labels for the output lanes right, or no?
Yes, the FIRE is correct, and you can freely interchange the PUSH and PULL gliders without affecting universality (it can either fire in the peaks or in the troughs).
The math seems to come out to each new bit arriving from the Cordership in half the time required to produce the previous bit. So it looks like an M-bit recipe will take something like k * 2^M ticks to build. What's the exact multiplier k? Seems to be less than 2850, and I should just think about it until it's obvious.
It's almost irrelevant, since M is so large. What is wonderful, however, is that the existing assembly can 'self-improve' by building an arbitrary decoder-plus-construction-arm to interpret the PUSH/PULL gliders (and ignore the FIRE gliders) and destroying the original decoder-plus-construction-arm. The improved decoder can be arbitrarily complex (and not affect N), and (say) interpret the stream of binary information as a program in binary lambda calculus. As such, you get the result that:

construction time < 2^(constant + KC(recipe))

where KC denotes Kolmogorov complexity. The constant subsumes the cost of constructing the improved decoder and the seeds of destruction for everything.

You can just write KC(pattern) rather than KC(recipe), since these are only separated by a constant. There's a Turing machine that takes as input a description of a pattern, and searches through all recipes until it finds a recipe for that pattern.

EDIT: Although actually I don't quite see how "construction time < 2^(constant + KC(recipe))" works. Don't you have to allow some time for the program describing the recipe to actually run? And for the recipe to actually be carried out?

EDIT2: In fact "Graham's number of blocks in a row" clearly can't be constructed in time 2^(constant + KC(recipe)), for speed-of-light reasons, since Graham's number is much larger than 2^KC(Graham's number).

Oops, mea culpa; just replace 'construction time' with 'distance of glider from origin'. I hadn't accounted for the running time of the program.

I followed the link to my previous post about construction-arm options, and my sample patterns could have stood to be labeled a little better:

I thought at first that the green gliders (#1 and #2, PULL) would have to be inserted in front of the white one (#3, PUSH) using RNE-19T84 for the one 37 ticks ahead on the same lane. But then the extra glider output would need active suppression with another signal, which starts looking complicated.

Then it turned out that everything can be done with NW31 (or equivalent) after all. Yellow gliders #4 and #5 look trivial to add on the north side of the pattern below, also with NW31 inserters, so they're not shown here:

Substitute any other G-to-Hs for the syringe+dependent conduits I used here, of course. My first try used Callahan G-to-Hs, but after I thought about it it seemed like that wouldn't be optimal. These circuits will be constructed with regular four-direction recipes and not slow salvos, so it seems worth throwing in an eater2 here and there if it saves a lot of other still lifes.

-- We might actually have to get Hersrch updated, finally, with all the latest Spartan conduits, to make the most efficient synchronized connections. (!)

Even if nobody comes up with a better construction arm mechanism, this one isn't too bad. The whole thing can be wired together with just a couple of splitters, plus a merge circuit so that the PULL shotgun also gets triggered at the right time when a PUSH signal comes in. (Seems like we already get a PULL signal that comes along with the FIRE signal -- that's very convenient!)

-- Or maybe it's simpler to adjust chris_c's / calcyman's processing circuitry somehow, so that it always sends out a PULL signal, and then optionally either a PUSH or a FIRE signal? Then you wouldn't even need the merge circuit.

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any need to build a five-glider shotgun, and then add more signal paths to suppress some of the gliders. That's a method that works well for p30/p46 circuitry, where there are surplus gliders flying around all over the place anyway -- but it doesn't seem efficient to duplicate that method here.
We can just as easily hook the inputs up directly to the appropriate shotgun barrels.

So what's the proposed plan for the shotgun? Pure p1, or p8, or p256? (The rest of the reverse caber-tosser uses p256 with plenty of 'double-negation' of glider streams, but maybe you can do something elegant with p8 reflectors and p8 bumpers and Herschel circuitry.)

Well, I guess I'm proposing using NW31 inserters for all five of the component guns, probably without the R64 turns shown in the sample come to think of it -- they'll stack better without them, and there have to be four NW31s on one side. On the other hand, the edge shooters will probably be easier to construct if they aren't packed too tightly, anyway.

Then, well, I think nobody has sorted out a reasonable-sized modern Spartan (or "Spartanish") universal-adjustment toolkit, so maybe somebody should do that. I'm guessing, without much evidence, that trombone-slide adjustments will be a little cheaper if they're made with p8 bumpers and reflectors, than if they're syringe-based G-to-H-to-G 180-degree turns. Pretty sure Snarks will never be the cheapest option.

Really the only way to know for sure is to find glider recipes for every possible option, and then compare them. Heh.

We'll need

-- 2 G-to-X-to-G adjusters for two signals out of (PUSH, PULL, FIRE) to line them up with the slowest of the three, in the construction-arm salvos;

-- 2 splitters-plus-adjusters for PULL and FIRE;

-- and if it isn't possible to coax an extra PULL signal out of the decoder somehow, we'll need an initial splitter on the PUSH output, maybe before we do anything else, with an adjuster to produce an identically-timed PULL signal. (I think it's currently guaranteed that if there's a PUSH signal there isn't a PULL signal for the current cycle, and vice versa.)

That's pretty much everything, right? Hook all that up and point it at an elbow block, with a hand block off to the side somewhere, and the Universal N-Glider Constructor will suddenly be in full operation.

Here's the completed synthesis of the caber tosser. It costs 266 gliders (which includes the two gliders that are released but not the cordership). There were actually a lot of mistakes I had made involving gliders crossing, but I managed to fix most of them with some clever recipe manipulation, except for one where I had to add two extra kickbacks.

Also, here's an idea for the shotgun that just fails, but may give somebody else inspiration so I'll post it. Each of the yellow gliders is one of the PUSH/PULL/FIRE signal and the white gliders/herschels are the shotgun. If you re-enable any of the yellow gliders, it will do the correct operation on the block except for PUSH, because the edgeshooter gets in the way:

Edit: just to be clear, I added a suppression cell to one of the yellow gliders that was supposed to be there before. It should be less confusing now.

I think I almost understand this idea, except isn't it necessary to re-enable both of the suppressed yellow gliders? Otherwise the perpendicular one flies off to the side through one of the inserters. And it also seems like the white glider runs into trouble with a spark from the active yellow glider, so overall ... I'm still confused.

You definitely can't insert a glider 37 ticks in front of another one with an NW31, but the RNE-19T84 inserter I was going on about a couple posts back could maybe work.

EDIT: fixed glider location in the NE.

I think the question for any of these "default shotgun" designs is how it would be triggered. If you need exact-timing merge circuits to run the shotgun, triggered from any of the three inputs PUSH, PULL, or FIRE, that seems like it will add up to more circuitry than the direct option I outlined. (?)

EDIT: 265 gliders -- I think I tried all the likely two-glider collisions to find something that could cleanly suppress four gliders, but there didn't seem to be one. There are 3-glider absorbers, but then you need another glider to knock out the last one anyway, so you might as well use two 2-glider absorbers (I used eaters, toward the bottom).

Also added gliders to replace the MWSS, just for the record:

-- Now it occurs to me that the "clean" requirement isn't necessary. The cleanup is all encoded in the Cordership position, so extra junk lying around is fine, as long as the construction recipe is cheap and the circuit works... Are there any gliders "wasted" elsewhere doing unnecessary construction cleanup?

It's occurred to me that you only need PULL and DESTRUCTIVE_FIRE, provided you have a receding c/12 block puffer to produce an infinite line of elbows. This design would be considerably simpler.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!
