As nobody has posted anything that is not in life I'll extend the deadline by 1 week. I haven't specified anything about symmetry so you can use any 2 state rule

There's a non-explosive rule where the tub is a 5000+ generation methuselah but I can't find it.

I have a new challenge if the old one is dead:

Find a cellular automaton, which, in a random 50/50 soup is:
*universal (all cells obey the same rules and have the same neighborhoods; I think this is kind of a given)
*forms more distinct regions then there are states in the cellular automaton.

A region is distinct area forming in a soup which has an immediately distinguishable differing structure or pattern of cells from another region.
It is sort of like an agar, but it can have variability.

A region must:
*Be non-trivial. This means that it can not be reflected, rotated, translated, or recolored to be equivalent to another region.
When I say "recolored" I mean that you simply replace one state in the region with a different state and have region behave identically.

*Be found in different shapes and sizes, and is extendible.
For example, a ship in life is not a region because it can only be extended in one direction and is almost never found in sizes larger than 4 or 5 cells long.

There is no time limit except the point where people get bored and want a new challenge.

Examples of cellular automata that do not qualify:

B3678/S34678:

The two "regions" in this CA behave identically. If isolated they would act the same. This is an example of simply recoloring.

B3/S0123:

There is only 2 true regions in this CA, not 5, because all the linear "regions" are just rotations or translations of each other. So there is only the static region and the linear region. This doesn't qualify because there needs to be more regions then there are states (in this case 3, because there are two states.)

B2/S23:

Here one could consider the cloudy unstabalized area a region, and the stabilized region another. None of the still lives or oscillators are regions because they are not extendable. Once again, there is 2 when there needs to be 3 or more.

Good luck! I'm really curious about this one because I myself haven't been able to find an CA like this.

#C The main culprit is the long line of duoplets, which take exponential time to eat. Luckily, this is the type of thing Hashlife is suited for, so you can turn the step up to 8^500+, which is what I did.

Here are 2 others that I haven't simulated to completion (because they last for even more unimaginably long amounts of time) but am pretty sure stabilise after much higher times (the prediction for the second one is based on simulations where I prematurely terminated the fuse):

Wow -- this is really impressive and deserves to be somewhere better than the Sandbox.

The number of pairs of dominoes is slightly more than 684188534511174 (depending on where you're counting from). Each of these domino pairs quadruples the amount of time elapsed, so the pattern will last a more than 2^2^50 generations.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Is the stabilised Voronoi-diagram section considered equivalent to the chaotic section?
Is it the same region type as the gutter areas or the 100%-density area?
Are the areas with gutters considered regions or are they disqualified because they can only be extended in 1 direction?
If they are considered regions, would the orthogonal gutters and diagonal gutters count as different regions or the same one?
Is the main 100% density part a recoloring of the vacuum and so not its own region?
And so on...

Perhaps people in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks, but I can't offer a solution if I can't tell what's being asked.

Is the stabilised Voronoi-diagram section considered equivalent to the chaotic section?
Is it the same region type as the gutter areas or the 100%-density area?
Are the areas with gutters considered regions or are they disqualified because they can only be extended in 1 direction?
If they are considered regions, would the orthogonal gutters and diagonal gutters count as different regions or the same one?
Is the main 100% density part a recoloring of the vacuum and so not its own region?
And so on...

Perhaps people in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks, but I can't offer a solution if I can't tell what's being asked.
Sorry I haven't responded in so long, but ya that would probably count. I was thinking of more of a toroidal world. I guess I forgot to mention that. But yes, this has sort of a line-like region, a homogenous region, and a chaotic region. That would probably count.

Find the most prolific isotropic non-totalistic rule under C1 symmetry, i.e. the rule with the highest (total objects)/(total soups) in Catagolue.
To be eligible, it must have at least 100K soups.

For benchmark, B3/S23 = 363720592619311/16650750356900 = 21.8440962013

He's talking about total objects, not total distinct objects. So Creperie actually scores relatively low at only 12982888/10473586 ≈ 1.236

The highest one I can think of is 38life, with an average of 568578728/1052000 ≈ 540.474 objects per soup.

If it weren't for the 'at least 100K soups' constraint, ae34ceit would have a score of 1386:
