OCA Discovery of the Year 2018

Happy new year, fellow lifers.
The OCA "D"OTY has certainly not been around that long; if I remember correctly, last year was the first one, organised and its results announced by yours truly.
We followed the same voting system as with the CGoL POTY, which I think worked very well and showed a fairly accurate representation of the general agreement. That is the one star, two stars, three stars voting system (where you can vote for as many candidates as you want).
For reference, here is the voting for the OCA DOTY from last year. Here are the candidates.

General Rules
It is probably good to favour engineered patterns, solved problems or conceptual ideas (such as the winner from last year) and projects that require addressing a challenge. The candidates should either be interesting enough in their own right for any reason (examples from CGoL include Copperhead) or have the potential to make an impact in some way in the future (such as the Snark).

Rules are allowed as candidates. However, please don't mindlessly nominate rules unless they have been VERY prolific and their dynamics have been explored in depth. A good example is Snowflakes, which was part of the competition last year*.

* It was actually hard to imagine that Snowflakes would have been developed so much during 2018 though! If the main project that was underway with all the SS constructions had been completed by now, it would be a strong contender.

I've only really been here for the latter half of the year, but I'd definitely like to nominate AforAmpere's adjustable slope ships.

I can't really think of many individual OCA patterns that would notable enough besides the already nominated adjustable-slope ships, but there were numerous interesting rules. The ones most fitting the "specifications" would probably be:

• Hype (B2-ac3aei4ae6i8/S23-ejq8), a rule which contains a very large variety of high-period oscillators, has been heavily apgsearched (the third most of any non-totalistic rule) and has been proven omniperiodic.
• Suns (B2ei3aeij4cjt5ky6ei/S1c2ace3jkn4aeijktw5ekry6in7e), a rule featuring complicated hassling mechanisms of a high-period oscillator, which has also been proven omniperiodic.
• ATPP (B3-ckq4z/S2-c3-a4iq5k6k), a rule featuring unusual failed-replicator spaceships, actual replicators, many linear and quadratic growths and even a large, engineered spaceship by toroidalet.

Other rules I think would be worth nominating but should maybe be seconded by someone include:

• Arrow (B3-jkn4a/S1e2-a3ijnry4n)
• Emitters (B2i3ai4cei5c6c7/S2-ae3acein4-t5-aq6cei7c8)
• Hive (B3-ry4ckn/S2-in3-cjn4it5aiky6-a7e8)

I'm pretty sure that it stabilizes due to simulations where the fuses were prematurely terminated, although I haven't run it to completion, even the first part, for obvious reasons. However, I am confident that after the main really long domino pair sequence burns down, it creates another fuse and burns through that. A compromise is the second one posted, which will also stabilise eventually, after somewhere on the order of 2^200,000 generations based on a rough and inaccurate estimate of burning through 100,000 duoplets.
